The pilot of a state-owned plane who was responding to a small forest fire was killed in a crash at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the town of Cary.

The 36-year-old state Department of Natural Resources pilot, Heath Van Handel of Appleton, was a former commercial pilot and flight instructor at Kansas State University in Salinas, said Ed Culhane, communications specialist for the DNR's west central region.
Sad to hear another one down.

Rest in Peace Heath
He was my private pilot instructor

I know what that is like. The best thing you can do is learn from the accident and move on I am afraid.

My instrument instructor was involved in a mid-air over a VOR. Lets just say I never do VOR work now without traffic advisories, and rarely do I even do normal air work without traffic advisories. Today I had a glider pass a mile to the side and 300 ft below me at the VOR, would have never seen him without ATC.
