DL Pilot Couple Share Retirement Flight

The better question is what the hell is wrong with you?

But we could fill an entire thread about that, couldn’t we?

Not a comment on these two, or anybody specifically taking an early out or a long term leave but...

It's complete and utter BS the number of people who are talking about taking these leaves to "save" a junior pilot's job. No you're not... you are getting paid between $100K and $200K to sit on your ass (which you can totally say) at home and not work for a few years. Sure, the feel good factor of preventing a poor FO from being kicked to the street might be swaying people in a few cases, but not most. Remember... a lot of these guys are avoiding downgrade themselves by stepping out for a bit, or having to fly crappy trips or having to learn a new airplane at 61 due to a reduction in their category.

Yup.
And it gets better. Recently heard from a bud about a FEDEX Captain early retiree who still wanted to fly. Given three chances by the company (an almost unheard of degree of care, coddling, and lenience - probably in deference to this individual's former position as a a 121 Captain), this individual could not pass a a 135 check ride or, apparently, fly an airplane without an autopilot and a prescribed approach procedure effected by the pushing of panel buttons... WAAADAAAFUUU??

That’s the really bad part. These guys are taking the early out, then still occupying a flying seat while collecting their 6 figures from their previous employer.

Flying a big jet is a lot different from flying a little spinny-thing plane. Fair amount different from even flying a little jet. That said, I've seen old Boeing/Airbus guys who put their spurs back on and did fine at the other stuff, and I've seen the opposite. If dude(tte) can do it, good on him/her. If they can't, well, I guess it's time to buy that boat. Their financial situation is none of my ken, nor my business. They can do it, or they can't...if grandmas/pas who can't hack it are getting to the line, I'd point the ole evil eye at the training and checking.

Is it just me of does is this one of the same?

So we're all cool with porn in Doug's living room now?

I'd love to share trips to cool places with my wife, but I've never really wanted to date someone in the industry. The idea of having conversations of "so how was your day? Yeah, me too" sounds kind of boring. Gotta be into different stuff.

I agree. Though it would be cool to share the passion, the "work, work, work" stuff would never end...

It can be sort of fun. But in my case I got her into aviation and then she got me into the airlines. Talking shop was actually interesting, different airlines, different perspective on things. Up until corona hit that is. Then the whole AAG/UAL and union pilot/management things turned the "sleeping with the enemy" from a joke to not quite a joke. It wasn't the decisive factor per se, but we have separated. Funny how it works out sometimes.
