DL Pilot Couple Share Retirement Flight

Every husband/wife pilot couple makes me think of these two :D

I don't know them but they couldn't have had a better "third wheel" relief FO for their last stroll through Milan, I flew with him a bunch at a different airline.

What a unique thing, to be able to work flights to Europe together for the last few years.

They were a riot to fly with. I didn’t know they were a couple at all and I spent a lot of my time thinking “Man, he keeps talking about his wife, but he’s flirty with the other copilot. Maybe he’s got an ex-wife and mortgage collection?” then I was like “OHHHHH. OK. Now I get it”

The early retirements are bittersweet and @Cav and I talked quite a bit about it. There are a lot of people that I knew and flew with that were integral parts of the person I am today and crafted my work ethic and will be greatly missed. I have a lot of letters to write when the list is finalized.

But there are some other ones... Let’s just say “Ya took the early.... Good ferrr youuuuuuuuuuuuu (us)” :)

...and good on them for stepping aside to save the jobs of two other pilots.

Not a comment on these two, or anybody specifically taking an early out or a long term leave but...

It's complete and utter BS the number of people who are talking about taking these leaves to "save" a junior pilot's job. No you're not... you are getting paid between $100K and $200K to sit on your ass (which you can totally say) at home and not work for a few years. Sure, the feel good factor of preventing a poor FO from being kicked to the street might be swaying people in a few cases, but not most. Remember... a lot of these guys are avoiding downgrade themselves by stepping out for a bit, or having to fly crappy trips or having to learn a new airplane at 61 due to a reduction in their category.

Indeed, lots of good people on the way out.

I was lucky enough to fly one's retirement flight recently...how cool.

Yep, a couple of those too!

Can it be both?

If my company offers leaves, I take it to benefit me. But they only offered it because it benefits others, or at least has the potential to without hurting anyone.

Fair point.

My network planning counterpart at DL retired at 62 - not because she wanted to, or because it created opportunities for someone else, but because the buyout offer was simply "too good" in her words.
