Diversity in the cockpit

[ QUOTE ]
Yup, and there are also folks that don't want to sit next to me in some restaraunts for a variety of reasons. Screw 'em!

Because you're short, right?

Once on a flight from the Bahamas to BWI with Air Tran I had an ALL black crew. Black pilots, black FA's.

That made my day!

One of my all time favorite captains, for a variety of reasons, Fred Boone.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ahh yes. I never knew him, but I've been told the 'rhyme'!

Wing are yummy. Great, now I'm hungry!

Fred has a great ability to always say something that makes you feel good, about yourself or the situation or whatever. And leave you laughing. That's hard to beat.

A few years back there was an article about this.Southwest had the first father daughter crew that were African American.

It really strikes me odd that a female is considered a minority, since they make up 52% of the world's population!

Somebody posted somewhere that 90% of the people in the world consider themselves "in the minority."

Kind of takes the value away from that word doesn't it?

well, if you look in the cockpit, females are the minority. Just like if you look at nursing, males are the minority.

Doug- That WORD avatar slays me!

In Dec my pax had an eyeful: not only did they have an all female crew, but my Captain was a large 5 months pregnant!

As my friend, a lady MD80 pilot, says to pax that balk "A woman brought you into this world, so why is it so hard to think she can't get you to Cleveland?"

what is the big deal about diversity in the cockpit. I do not think there should be a required number of minorities in the cockpit. I feel the only reason a person should be able to fly is if they are qualified. Color, sex etc should have nothing to so with it! They should not be given incentives to fly. I heard that women if they have a private, will have the rest of thei training paid for, BS! Also, they have women only interviews at airlines, BS!

I think it is wrong to help push minorities into the cockpit!

So far in my short SkyWest career (4 months.) I have flown with 3 female Captains. I have a two day trip next week with one too. In every case they have been excellent pilots and Captains. I see a fair amount of female F/O's too. Still more male pilots in general, but I think a larger percentage of men tend to seek out pilot careers than females do.

I know women pilots who participated in them

You talking the early-mid '90s when United was hiring a few 350 hour pilots, since that was their mins then?

Very well stated. Positions should not be earned because of color or gender (seems like another form of discrimination), but earned because they are the better pilot and deserve the job more (no matter what your race or gender is).

[ QUOTE ]
Do you think that there is reverse discrimination in aviation?

[/ QUOTE ]

Isn't reverse discrimination an oxymoron? I mean, doesn't discrimination...well.....not discriminate?
