Discovery at Barksdale 9-20-09

...then use their Russian strings, and see if they could get some part of the Buran. That would be really cool to see them next to each other.
Well unfortunately the Buran that went into orbit was destroyed in a hanger collapse in 2002.

There was one other Barun that was nearly flight ready at the program's cancellation and apparently it's in storage at Baikonur. There were several more in the process of being built as well as a few test articles. More than you ever wanted to know can be found here.
What are you guy's talking about???? It's a freighter, it's supposed to look like that!
:D

Absolutely awesome pics.
Im pretty jealous

that DC9 looks like the one that operates here out of EFD, maybe flyguy could confirm...

I was this close to going to the shuttle launch back in like dec i htink it was but had to cancel at the last minute. i was able to see it though from daytona still. pretty awesome sight even from taht far away.

Yup, I'd heard about that. Its a real shame, but crazy stuff happens. I think it would be really cool to get to see one of the US Shuttles next to even a mockup of a Buran, just to compare them.

You have to go down there once. I'd seen the last few launches from DAB, and thought it was cool. There is nothing like the sound of the launch hitting you. It was amazing to be that close (I was 10 miles away, just north of the launch complex).

Fantastic pics, thanks. I got up to Edwards for the first time a couple weeks ago and saw the landing - it was even more awe-inspiring than I expected, and I had damn high expectations. I was watching from the middle of the HAC and was blown away by how narrow the HAC was, and how fast Discovery descended. It's one thing to read about it and quite another to see it in person.

Now I gotta figure out how to get to a launch....
