Diamond Da-20\'s

How come they arent approved for IFR? Also are any of the newer ones such as the eclipse approved?

The composite airframe isn't lightening certified; I think you need some kind of wire mesh in the structure to spread the energy of a strike around; this is not a problem on metal airframes.

If I remember right none of the 20's are.

Our school uses both the Da20 and the Da40. The 40 is IFR approved, while the 20 is not.

The 20 has no pitot heat, nor does it have a backup source of power. The 40 does have pitot heat with full axis autopilot, and it has a backup electrical source of power in case the main electrical source quits on you.
