Diabetic and meds.

I’m a type 1 diabetic from the age of 2. I didn’t used to take good care of myself and had developed diabetic macular edema which is now being treated and gone. Current treatment is eye injections for prevention of it returning. My A1c is always 5.8-6.0. I also take seroquel, Wellbutrin and two forms of insulin (humalog and novalog), recently put on trazodone for sleep. Is there any hope for me to receive a class 3 medical? Should also add that my diabetes has been under control for more than 2 years.

Hi Jethro,

It is possible that you could qualify for a medical, but you have numerous issues that the FAA would want to evaluate carefully. Type I DM may be given a special issuance by the FAA if they meet the following criteria:

Note number 6, verification by an eye specialist that no clinically significant eye disease exists. This would be accomplished by getting your eye disease under control and having your eye specialist complete a form 8500-7.

Additionally, you list medications for sleep and possibly psychiatric disorders. Both sleep and depression are very carefully assessed by the FAA, usually by a special AME with HIMS (Human Intervention Motivational Study) training. Without knowing more about your situation I am hesitant to advise further about this.
