DFW area CFI initial

Who did you take the CFI initial with in the DFW area? Can you provide an outline of what was covered in the checkride?

I did my training in Addison. I did my CFIA checkride with Patrick Arnzen. The checkride costs $1000. He had me prepare a cross country for the checkride, and had me teach XC flight planning and weight and balance. I also taught steep turns and accelerated stalls. We also covered the ACS. We covered everything on FOI's. The flight was pretty straight forward, just keep on teaching, and make sure you know the few changes in the test standards in the ACS.

Another dpe you can do the checkride with is Dale Williamson. The checkride is pretty straight forward. He doesnt expect you to teach like an academic but make sure you convey the information and simple as possible. For CFII he's very big on GPS, RAIM, WAAS, LAAS and RNP.

Lon Sauter is another dpe I'd be comfortable doing the checkride with. I did my instrument rating checkride with him. He's big on FOI's so make sure you know them. He'll probably have you prepare a XC and make you teach XC flight planning and quiz you from it, from take off to landing and stuffs en route the flight. I don't have much notes Lon, but, a CFI I know did the check with him and she taught soft field t/o and landings and he loved it. Lon is also an A&P so he'll probably quiz you on systems on the complex plane youre using.

Were you at Flyers?

Damn those guys are up in the $1000 range now?! I was out there last year at Flyers and they had just bumped it from $600 to $800.

Well some dpe still charge $700 to $800, the dpe I was booked with wanted $1000 the excuse was he won't be able to do other checkrides for the rest of the day since he's doing an CFIA check with me.

I remember paying $100 for my private ride. That was 12 years ago so I don't know if I actually paid that or if I just remember it that way, but there you are.

Were you able to chose your DPE? I've been told that it has to go through the FSDO and if no one's available, they assign you a DPE.

Had to reschedule due to mechanical issue, but was assigned a FAA inspector. I've heard that North Texas FSDO is now doing most initials themselves.

Ouch. I'm pretty sure all initials are supposed to go through the FSDO, for the exemption in high volume areas where they just can't get it done. I guess DFW fixed their bottleneck issue.

Apparently the pass rates are pretty similar here between the FSDO and DPE, so it's not a big deal. At least it's free

Are you sure about the pass rates? It could be just based on a small sample, but I have met several people who passed the initial with a DPE, while most failed with FAA. All applies to the DFW area.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a DPE? I was going to try and see if Felix Chiota was available, possibly Dale or Patrick as well.
