It is my understanding that you count backwards six months from the current month to determine currency. For example: A pilot completes six approaches including holding and tracking in April of 2008. He remains current through October 08 since there are six months preceding the current month in which he completed his requirements.

Is this correct or would you count the current month meaning currency would have expired at the end of September?

Looks like you count backwards from the month you're to determine currency.

Yes, that's it.

For some reason people seem to have problems with the calendar month concept, especially when combined with the "look-back" idea.

Today it is October. The preceding 6 months are

(1) September - (2) August - (3) July - (4) June - (5) May - (6) April

It's really just that simple. No, the month "preceding" October is not October.
