Departing KSAN VFR

This is my Custom Title
I'm picking up a couple friends soon in KSAN. Going to file IFR into KSAN, but it would be simpler leaving VFR if that's even doable. Whatcha think? I've never called up a Bravo Clearance Delivery and asked for a VFR departure....

I think it is as simple as calling the clearance delivery frequency on your Jep chart and requesting a departure clearance.

I go in and out of SAN VFR all the time. Why would it be a problem? If you have to hold (VFR) inbound you can usually see an orca at Sea World which is just northwest of the airport. In all reality VFR is way quicker than IFR any day in a GA aircraft because of speed and spacing. Of all socal airports I really love SAN. Landmark takes great care of us and they will drop us off anywhere we like nearby. We go for lunch, maybe ice cream at Ghirardelli and then they come get us.

IDK why, but just since its VFR out of a Class B. I've done it 500+ times from Class C but never VFR out of a B.

Thanks.... Just don't want to look like a dork in from of the passengers. "NXXXXX, why are you calling me for a VFR departure...."

What makes you think a class B has the authority to deny VFR operations?

some airports require a call to departure clearance for any departure...

that's not how I took this...to me this was him trying to avoid an unnecessary radio call.

I don't. But just in case someone on this forum has advice against is why I am asking. Better to find out something ahead of time instead of be embarrassed in front of people that think I know what I'm doing.

So do you call clearance delivery before taxi?

Just let clearance know what you are, and where your going. They'll give a heading, atitude and departure clearance. Just like class C.

Are they still charging their $25 fee?

Something like that, but they waive it with a fuel purchase, which I *think* was 20 gallons. Either way, $25 is cheaper than 2 taxi rides! Last time I was there though there was some construction on the north taxiway. They parked me in 'remote' parking so I did an intersection departure at it was easy peasy. Don't be shy. Of all class B areas I deal with they are the red carpet committee. One of my students was sent on a radar vectored tour of all the sites on his last trip to Brown. When I go to MYF I'll ask for a transition over Miramar so I can sneak a peak of the cool stuff. They will let you do just about anything if you ask nicely.

:yeahthat:

You: "Lindbergh Clearance, Cessna XXX is a Cessna 172/A, VFR to Santa Monica with Information Kilo"

Them: "Cessna XXX is cleared out of Bravo Airspace, maintain VFR, climb and maintain two-thousand, departure frequency xxx.x, squawk 1234".

Easy peasy.

Getting into SAN IFR is easy and I like it because it forces ATC to give you some wake turbulence separation. When VFR I always get something like; Number 2 following 767 1 mile final, traffic a 757 4 mile final, turn base now. Caution wake turbulence, cleared to land.

It's easier to get out VFR because they can turn you after takeoff so the fast movers can go right behind you. They usually want a turn right after takeoff and the heading they give takes you about 200' over the control tower. Once at night they were trying to get me to start my turn and all three wheels were still on the ground.

SoCal gives clearances into San Diego class B like candy on Halloween.

Ever tried to get into LAS when it's busy VFR.

"Your going to have to wait a little while. Remain clear of Class Bravo."

That's usually because flow is in effect and when you pop up VFR they have no place to put you. Even if you've received FF from center you don't have a reservation.
