Denying the Jumpseat

No kidding. What's your point? That ALPA has no balls? And that's news? Maybe that's why its time for INDIVIDUAL Captains to draw a line and stop enabling the scumbags lowering the wages/benefits bar by giving them free rides to work.

ALPA is a democratic organization, which means that it's vote is it's MEMBERS vote.

You're an ALPA member, right? Man up and vote accordingly.

jtrain...ALPA is a representative democracy. I'm not a representative, therefore I have no vote. All I can do is inform my status rep on how I think he should vote.

I think the bigger issue is society as a whole. We have turned into a society of people that only care about themselves. Is that not the issue? Not unionization.

Now, as much as I can't stand some of the things Velocipede says, I do kind of have to say as a young pilot, agree with him on this stuff. But at least tell me that you (Velo) at least tell them the EXACT reason your denying them the jumpseat. Not being specific only makes these people resentful of you and possibly (If they know their info) resentful of union pilots.

And just who is the police that get to decide who is a worthy airline and who isnt? Are you really going to deny a Jetblue jumpseater who used to fly for your airline, and who used to fly for USAir (but was furloughed)? Give me a break!

I do. I'm the Captain. And I'm ESPECIALLY going to deny a jetBlue guy who used to be an ALPA member. They're stabbing us in the back and they don't have the luxury of a military guy or a newbie to say, "I didn't know what I was doing."

You dont commute I guess? And if you do, honestly are you going to do two legs if one would do on one of these "terrible" carriers like Jetblue? I just dont buy it. This is just forum tough talk. I fly for a union carrier myself. Am I pro union, yes. Am I going to start denying jumpseats to guys trying to get home b/c i feel like they single handedly have destroyed everything, no. Not only from that standpoint, but you are screwing your fellow pilots at your own company. Say for example one of these carriers are now doing all the flights from your hometown to base, and they start denying b/c "we've" started denying. Now your co-worker cant get a ride to work. This situation is what alot of guys found themselves in with GoJets. Idont like Gojets, I dont agree with what they did and what they are doing. That said I would not takeoff with empty seats in the back and leave them there. Jumpseat wars are bad juju and this industry is extremely small. That guy you are looking down your nose at may be looking across the interview table at some future job. Maybe your 59 and Flying the 777 to Tokyo and have all but lost your medical, but for the rest I think its good advice.

Maybe those non-union commuters should move to base, instead of using up a union benefit - fought for, and meant for, union members.

So you won't ever apply to, or work for Skywest, Colgan or JetBlue? Hows about ASA, they're owned by Skywest?

Oh, but they're ALPA, it's different...right?

No kidding. What's your point? That ALPA has no balls? And that's news?

And you wonder why ALPA is not getting voted in at JB. When I jumpseat on another carrier, or they jumpseat with us, we are exachanging a benefit that ALPA of days gone by negotiated. (I have no idea what year so go ahead and school me on that). However, based on everything I've heard about ALPA, whether here on the boards, from former ALPA members, current ALPA members, or written propaganda, there is easily as much animosity toward them as there is praise. And it's not just the USAir guys.

I won't say there will never be a union at JB, but the evil empire will have to look elsewhere for support. I just don't see where they would do anything at all good for us. But I'm supposed to pay into it to support the cause even if it means re-negotiating the things we already have, right?

Let's just undo that de-regulation act. That's when this whole capitalistic competition thing among airlines got started.

"there is easily as much animosity toward them as there is praise"

I'm a big pro union guy but I have to admit, on our private message board, whenever ALPA is brought up as being more effective than an independent union, there is a huge backlash of guys who are ex-ALPA that scream no, no, no. That it's better to be independent. There are also some that think we'd be better off with ALPA. I really think the silent majority, though, (me included) is pretty happy with the status quo....

That's a pretty strong statement there. If these airlines are so horrible to you guys(and by you guys I mean the guys that are actually flying) why do you have reciprical agreements with them? Obviously someone saw a benefit.
I'd be more worried these days about others taking your flying away then Jetblue undercutting your contract.
Also not every non-union pilot is happy with that. But apparently they just have to live in base because you have a hardon for unions yet you've never received any benefit thusfar.

I'm going to wrap the thread up because it's way past it's freshness date. I thought it was the cat box, but it wasn't, DOH!
