Delta Upgrade Time Vol. II

Probably like making a DC-9 and an MD-88/90 a common category. I can probably still fly the -88/90 blindfolded, but damn, the -9 scares the bejeezus out of me. I could maybe shoot a pattern, but even turning on the autopilot would be like sea serpents and bra clasps.

That's because the FO is the autopilot.

I may have the same type, and I could probably BS my way through getting a Mad Dog from Point A to Point B. But it wouldn't be pretty. The cockpits are incredibly different. A whole lot of the systems that are automated on the 717 are old school on the -88. Take a look at the threads on APC where the DAL newhires are bitching about all of the work that they have to do in the right seat of the -88. That's all non-existent on the 717. It basically does everything for you. Having crews switch back and forth between airplanes that are so different in the cockpit philosophy, even if the underlying systems are the same, it generally a bad idea.

You're missing the most important reason. It would require less pilots on the list.

Is the 90 closer to the 88 or the 717?

I explained that to somebody last night. I think @ChasenSFO...

We were talking about how Surejet separates the 200 from the 700/900. I want as many divisions as possible because it leads to more people and more chances for better relative seniority.

Correct. Each category requires a set amount of reserves and line pilots. When SJA combined the domestic and international 757/767 categories, staffing requirements went down, adding to the stagnation.

You damn well better tell your reps this then. Sad re-ignition of rumors of dual qual coming. Talk about a final nail in the coffin for upgrades and improved relative seniority.

121 newb questions: if that junior captain was somehow senior enough to bid FO on the 777, how would he be paid? His old captain rate or the new FO rate? If he had been paid more as a captain on another aircraft, and decided to bid FO, would he have to take a pay cut?

He would be paid the 777 FO rate. Yes it would be a pay cut on a pure hourly rate basis

With the other Legacies having it, wonder if the pressure will be on to accept pay banding. I'm willing to listen if the price is right for what we get in return.

Way closer to the 88. The 717 is so automated it's closer to an Airbus. 717 guys have no need to tune any navigation frequencies. All automatic. On the 88/90 we are tuning frequencies even Enroute in case of map shift.

The benefit? Lighting quick seniority progression on the 88, especially in ATL. Spent 2.5 years on reserve at ASA before holding a line continuously. Spent one month on reserve at SouthernJets.

Canceled. 88 Autopilot system too antiquated to work with glass retrofit. Needs an entire flight deck redesign like 717 to work.

Are they going to do that? Or is Delta going to ditch the airframe when the avionics in it can't keep up?

I hope they autoupload with the Pegasus FMS. You only get the true advantages when you add all the updated wind data.

I still remember chugging across the Gulf of Mexico leaving South Florida for DFW in a AHRS-only mad dog and marveling at the map confusing itself.
