Delta Air Lines is considering a bid for American Airlines parent AMR Corp. in bankruptcy court, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Thursday afternoon.

The report also named TPG Capital as a possible suitor for American. TPG was formerly known as Texas Pacific Group, best known in the travel space as the equity firm that bought out Continental Airlines in the 1990s. TPG has also invested in America West and Midwest Airlines in the 2000s, and worked with American in a failed 2009 bid for Japan Airlines.

TPG also owns the highly influential flight booking tech firm Sabre Holdings.

American Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on November 29, 2011.

Lol. Perfect!

Then they can kick out the American Eagle flowups too. Delta: We hate regional pilots and it shows!

God I hope this merger possibility dies a quick death.

If true, it's the end of days.

House: Sell
Food truck: Acquire
Trading Post: Sell Telex 5x5's and LuggageWorks 23"

I like the sound of this deal. Would finally put an end to the absolute disaster that is AA and would get rid of the overcapacity in the domestic market.

I see it playing out like this. Delta drops O'hare, keeps Dallas, LA and Miami (that's the big winner there).

They would likely have to dump the slots at JFK & LGA, but would get T-8 at Kennedy.

I'd say I'm surprised, but this is US Airline bafoonery at it's best(worst?).

Let the hatin' begin.

Is it more like the MTV (kinda) Classic: "Real World" or more like Jerry Springer:

Real Airline World: When two separate companies are smooshed together. Everyday, they say hi and drink beer. Forced to live together, the politeness stops and the real world begins....

or;

Today on Springer: Jilted lovers collide! What happens when a shotgun wedding is announced? We're all set for the faceoff when two groups are really not pitted against each other, but act like it. We'll see folks in their mid-50's acting like Bros at a college bar. Our first segment takes on United and Continental. After that, we have American and Delta.

Anyway, if this actually comes to fruition, I am very sorry that a bunch of folks are forced into this corner. I don't think it'll get that far. The only way a Delta bid would be approved would be via Fragmentation of the Airline of some nature. TPG would probably leverage and leave. Either is not good.

Reminds me when US Airways tried a hostile takeover of Delta when they were in Ch. 11. Thank gawd...

Except USAirways never was Delta.

Delta is flying high right now. Probably able to raise money. And as pointed out in many articles, AA has some very coveted delivery positions.

I went through a fairly tepid merger, but man, I wouldn't wish a merger on my worst enemies.

Grown men acting like jilted kindergarteners that didn't get a bouncy red ball at recess. The worst days of the "Lavatory" have absolutely NOTHING, NOTHING on the DALPA forums.

Cat fights between flight attendants.

The memo that superseded last weeks memo that superseded last weeks memo has been superseded only to be superseded by this new bulletin.

Rumors, gossip and that Iraqi information minister seems to be a consultant for all parties involved.

Really wish I had the financial depth to "sit this one out" if it actually happens.

And my favorite:

"On the 330, it worked like this...."

"Interesting... on the mad dog it worked differently as well"

"Well, I never flew the mad dog!"

"I never flew the Airbus, oh do you want me to hit LNAV for ya? :)"

Mark these words: American will be broken up into several large pieces and sold to several airlines.

What are you going to give us if it doesn't come to fruition?

There is no way the DOJ will allow this to happen. They about had a heart attack during the slot swap, they aren't going to let DAL be the largest airline in the world two fold.

any precedent as to what happens to pilots and their seniority when ailing airline are broken up and parted out?

I wouldn't be surprised if in the event PNCL goes ch11 cjc gets sold. but then what happens to the pilots?

What do you guys get... hmmm... I suppose I could change my handle to "Imaketerribleassumptions" OR I'll buy anyone a beer that calls me on it and finds themself in MD.

We always say that and the DOJ always finds a compromise to make it happen...except UAL/USAir back in the day.

Gotta say though, the fact that this is in the press makes me worry less.
