Delta pilot basic qualifications

Thanks Doug, I missed the jobs available post.

I don't mean to be negative about Delta, the airline industry is just a little scary when you're coming from the job security found in the military. But I believe QOL trumps job security and I certainly wouldn't turn down an opportunity with Delta if I had it....

And I'm no military cheerleader (at least as a pilot career) - but we'll see if that changes in 2 months when I'm collecting unemployment.

Doug,
In your experience at the DAL, how realistic is it to get hired if you meet all the requirements but have very low PIC time? Know any military guys that got in this way? How hardcore is the interview process? Ive heard of some weird psych tests etc?

Delta loves military guys and I don't think the PIC time is very relevant at Delta. The hiring process is 3 part. Part 1 Testing, Part 2 Interview and Part 3 Psychological/Medical evaluation. The first part was prettty tough as I recall...lots of guys didn't make it through. Part 2 is actually fun...the interviewers treat you well and they lay on the southern charm. Part 3 is strange...it amounts to sitting on a couch while a Freudian evaluator deems how airworthy you are upstairs.

I probably had 25 hours of PIC turbine by the time I started ground school. In fact, B767Driver did my type rating checkride!

During the interview Plato asked "Well, tell me about a time as captain when you made a tough decision" and I only had about three trips under my belt to reference.

I just checked my logbook. It was 2.4 hours long in the middle of the night in Grand Rapids, MI. It simply says...."Doug Taylor ATP/BE1900 type rating checkride & Part 121 captain proficiency check satisfactory." You must have done a good job. Everyone at that company was very well prepared for checkrides. I only remember 2 failures...and they were just bonehead moves and the FAA did not allow for retraining during type rides (unlike for recurrent). I enjoyed doing the training....but did not care much for doing type rides (too much tension).

Bill had exactly 0 TPIC when he went to DL. 0 turbinePIC that is, he had gobs of PIC time.

His interview was in late 1998 or early 1999. He swam in the pool for almost a year before he finally got into class.

Well that makes me feel good! Ill def. have the time req's within this new year (all mil. multi turbine), but was curious how important PIC time was regarded at DAL. As far as the testing..what was it.. multiple choice type tests? Is there any prep out there for these?

Did he have 0 turbine time because he was an FO at Trans World? And all his PIC time was maybe from his training days or maybe (freight) or whatever he was flying pre Trans World?

prep for psychology tests? are you kidding??? just answer the questions and that'll tell them what type of personality you have, if you work well with others (ie: if you'll work good with the crew) or even if you have any problem tendencies that might make you an unemployable candidate etc....
