Delta orders some Airbuses. Airbii? Airbux?

Yeah 321s seem weird at this point. They must have gotten a really good deal on them as everything I have heard about them makes them sound like an absolute dog.

I've heard the same.

From a passenger prospective the 321 is like Shangri-La whereas the -800 and the -900 are tortuous.

There are days that I went to USAirways to ride their barebones 321 home when there were seats on the -800 with wifi and live TV.

From a paying pax stand point, that cabin kicks the ever living crap out of any 73x, 75x cabin.

I ride transcon coach a lot. A. Lot.

I agree, but when was the last time an airline considered passenger preference to the bottom line?

They probably got the old gen for a steal.

Exactly. I've seen that there were roughly 100 frames left in the A32xCEO (Current engine option) series. So, selling 40% of that takes a bunch of pressure off of EADS. Plus it sounds like quite a few of the A321's will be US builds.

Not ever. Well, MaxJet & Eos.

Probably sips fuel in comparison to similar airframes, or other incentives. I'm just thankful for collateral comfort.

Generic question. Is the regional market shrinking and are mainline carriers taking back flying?

Maybe, but probably not really. The number of RJs flying around is shrinking (slightly) but the number of seats flown by RJs is staying the same or possibly going up.

I know my airline has started going back into cities that had only regional airlines flying.

There are also a number of cities that are now Express only that had mainline service in the recent past.

Its really pretty strange actually. Especially when you look at Delta.

Go into SAV, CHS, and increasingly, CAE and you'll usually see a bunch of mainline DL planes. But go to CVG and MEM, places that used to be hubs. RJs everywhere.

Growth I guess. Of course, I'll tell ya when there isn't an additional plane parked out in the desert as they arrive in a couple more years:

Delta Announces Order for 40 Airbus Aircraft
Today, Flight Operations kicked off our Summer/Fall 2013 Base Visits in ATL. As you can imagine, the announcement that Delta is purchasing 10 Airbus 330-300s and 30 A321s was an area of interest. From a corporate fleet strategy perspective, this transaction will provide Delta with economically efficient and proven technology aircraft. The A330-300 and A321 will also improve our customers’ flight experience and allow us to enhance our network flexibility and performance.

The first A330 delivery is scheduled for spring of 2015, with three additional airplanes scheduled for that year, four in 2016 and the final two in 2017. Delta's first three A321s are scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2016 with 12 more due in that year. The remaining 15 aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2017.

As I told the pilots in the lounge today, these are growth aircraft and they will increase our pilot staffing needs over the next several years. Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, we expect to post an Advance Entitlement bid this week that will contain new narrowbody captain positions and we'll continue to post a series of small AEs for the foreseeable future as we take deliveries of the 717 and 737-900.

I actually hope they put the A321 on the ATL-SEA, ATL-PDX routes...seems more "757" like than the 73-900ERmegastretchlowerpayingreplacementaircraft.

I gather that you fly for a freight operator. Just curious as to why you are forced to fly in coach on transcons? Friends of mine who fly for other freight operators fly transcon in business. Why the difference?

Most are domestic coach international first only.
