Oh I am very happy and the crews I have JS'd with on all airlines have been great...knock on plastic panel covers........ I just like to poke a little fun.
 
Although you should do this every time you ride in the actual jumpseat, make sure you hand your license/medical along with your crew ID to the captain of the flight when you check in. In my years of commuting, Delta pilots were way more likely to request the license/medical vs other carriers.

I had a funny thing on my own carrier one day. Admittedly, the only person who probably looks more like a 12 year old in his dad's uniform is @Nick but the fourth stripe throws a lot of people off.

I walk in, say "Sir! I'd like permission to ride your jumpseat to work!" and I unlatch my ID and hand it along with my "1P" boarding pass.

He asks for my medical and my license. Hmm, ok, not something generally asked for when you're an online carrier, but ok.

He looks at it really closely, kind of squints at the type ratings and seems really confused. He hands it back, I get settled in and he says, "Do you have your application in?"

"Where?"

"'SouthernJets', we're hiring 800 pilots this year, how much PIC do you have?"

"A couple hundred hours"

"Well, hmmm, I think they're still looking at 1000 PIC, but get your stuff in, you never know".

Meanwhile, here I am in full SouthernJets winter uniform, handed him a SouthernJets ID, and he saw my license with types in a 737, DC9, A330, A320, 767, 757…

I just said, "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you sir"

You should have told him you worked for ASA and that Delta was just about to give us E190s configured with 76 seats after the Delta pilots turned down the TA. And then sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

I think it would require a gross weight waiver.
 
FYI, DFW-ATL is probably the worst city pair to try to JS on DL. Very, very, very commuter heavy and very full in the back. Be sure to have a back up or three.

This is true.

Many of my former DFW miscreants went to NYC because ATL was a crazy commute.

Like setting alarm clocks and predialing just to hit the VRU exactly at noon to book the jumpseat.
