Delta Hiring in the Future?

While surfing the "other" crackpipe, came across some guys over there saying they might be preparing some hiring over at mother D in the near future. My roomate said they are about 1000 pilots fat rite now, but thats for the fall and spring flying. With some new international stuff starting up next summer, maybe 1000 pilots fat, can turn into 1000 short on the staffing. Wishful thinking, I know. But hey, any news like this, wheather its true or not is better than all the doom and gloom we have been reading about.

That's because we aren't really 1000 pilots fat. Only a few hundred.

I just went back on reserve here in NYC ER. Take a look at the reserve levels on iCrew. Min reserves for most days is 16. Actual reserves is around 48! If in January I get scheduled for a day in the Sim then I think I will have "won" reserve :laff:.

Granted that there are more reserves available than required. Keep in mind that those numbers in icrew are the result of a rather complicated formula in the contract and don't actually represent a real world number. Most guys get confused about this. Talk to Scott L about it if you want to know more.

The reason gys are sitting around doing nothing is due to the seasonal pulldown, coupled with the economic pullback. Add in the more efficient use of crews and planes being pulled down for MX and mods, and we are where we are.

I haven't flown since the 27th of Sept, and except for a B period 606 requiring two days in ATL in Oct, I haven't left home since then. Not even one SC in Oct. As a commuter I'm not complaining though.

I guess the takeaway is that, yes, we are overstaffed. 1000 over? No. Over enough to furlough? If it was a more traditional time, I would be suprised if we weren't. The break even point for a furlough is between 18 to 24 months, last time I asked. However, once the dust settles on this merger, we may very well need to actually hire. Of course, if the economy tanks further, or some catastrophe happens, then all bets are off.

As usual, YMMV.

I know there were alot of applicants selected for interviews a couple of years ago, but then had them canceled that are supposed to get first shot at it this time.

It would be great if they started interviewing again in the near future. (Even better if they gave second chances in case you muffed it up the first time. :o )

We're "fat" on CAs here, and they just increased reserve levels. Sometimes it's not because they're increasing reserves because of a lack of lines. In our case, it was to cover more sick calls and blown commutes. I'm not flying any less (I'm actually flying MORE as of this month) than I was a couple of months ago, and we've got at least 10 more reserves in Memphis on the CA side. Line values went up, number of reserves went up. Makes sense if you take more lineholders and make them reserve, the remaining line holders are gonna be flying more.....or calling in sick/fatigued more. I've only had 6 days of reserve this month, and I'm already close to 30 hours.

As for Delta hiring, from what I hear from the NorthDelta crews in Memphis, I'd be really surprised if it was anything before the end of next year/early 2011.

If we started interviewing it would be in January or February - 2010 or 2011. They train in the winter for the summer flying.

I predict most of them will be military.

Maybe...and "sons and daughters of" who've been complaining about there two years sentences at the regionals. Oh...the ex-interns too....There's a whole list of special groups that need to get attended to.

Since their whole timeline from regionals to the majors has been thrown askew by the recession, don't you think they deserve special consideration so they can get back on track? :sarcasm:

Sure there will be some applicants coming over from the military; but the various branches are doing a pretty good job at keeping their pilot force. There'll be more freight/regional newhires than military. Unless the military downsizes or gets rid of their incentives; the hiring pool is going to contine to be from the civillian pilot sector.
