agreed. :D btw who/what is harvey-rihn?

aggie, to answer your most important question I would say probably not. I would more than likely go FBO route for the money savings over an academy. However of the FBO's I've flown at I was not at all impressed with them. Academy style, like PEA looked good but wasnt all that impressed with them either. Riddle Ops was good but even way back when when i first went there expensive as hell.
The way I'm paying DCA though is a 10k upfront and then like 5k at a time after that, so I'm not taking out a monster loan and handing it all over at one time. Then the VA pays me back on a monthly basis.
Again would I still go if not for VA? Hard to say for sure but likely not. Not sure where youre at, I'm assuming Galveston based on your name, but the other airports here in Houston are on the NW side which as you know would be a hell of a drive. I think Pearland could be an option for you as well.
the job guarantee i could care less about. To quote Chris Farley, "I could take a #### in a box and mark it guaranteed if you want. Seriously, I've got the time." I mostly want the academy for the intensive training ona daily basis and need the 141 for VA. I know the "same" could be done at a FBO but I've never seen it.

Well guys my plan to stick it out and get my private while still working came to a dramatic halt yesterday when my company announced that they will begin laying off my position in the coming weeks. Given my position in the company and the fact that I'm 24 and have been there for less than 9 moths all but assures me that "the 2 bobs" are going to pull my ticket and release me into the unemployed wilderness. That being said it's time for me to make some critical decisions in my life and to plan for my future, in short; its time to throw long. I know you guys have raised some valid objections about the academy route, however, sometimes in a recession going back to school is often the best thing you can do to make yourself more marketable. Now I already know all the arguments against going to a flight academy and entering this industry all together but lets face it we all suffer from the same bug, the bug that makes us willing to give up everything that we have just for the chance to "slip the surly bonds of earth and dance the skies on laughter-silvered wings". That being said I'm going to attend a flight academy and the only question now is where? Yes it is going to be expensive just as all Education is, however, what is even more expensive is the thought of spending your life in a job that you makes you miserable. Yes I'm going to be poor for many many years but who is more poor the individual with a lot of happiness in what he does and little money or the individual with a lucrative income in a miserable profession. My choice is obvious. Simply put if who you are is defined by the stuff you have than who are you when you lose all that you have; the big house, the sports car in the drive way, the country club who are you when you lose all of that? Your nothing to nobody that's who you are. Your life is devoid of meaning all because you based your existence on stuff instead of happiness.

Friends I have heard your objections and many of them are valid however, at this crossroads in my life I feel that this option is going to take me where i want to go the quickest and in the most efficient way possible. What I need to know from you guys is where; FSA, DCA or some other place that has a fast track structured 141 program with financing options. I know I have been rambling on quite a bit so I think it's time for me to digress but hope you can all appreciate the stress I am going through right now. Thanks again for everyones input and all the best.:)
