Well the 787 actually is a solid and popular airplane. But I think the teething issues they had, and what it might do to a stock price scared them away from innovation.

No doubt it seems good from the outside. But they have completely omitted a huge section of the market, that the Canadians just snatched up.

Now the question is how will Bombardier make it over the hump of such a huge financial loss just to sell airplanes ($500m?).
 
What are the pay rates for it, or is that to be negotiated being a new type on property?
 
Building the C series has brought Bombardier to the brink of bankruptcy. Without this order and subsequent follow ons they would be sunk. Boeing was (sorta) smart to say they'd stop betting the farm. That being said eventually they'll have to come up with something different.
