Delta: We're 'first in the world' to add Wi-Fi to regional jets

Delta Air Lines has begun adding Wi-Fi to its fleet of regional jets, a move it says makes it "the first airline in the world to provide in-flight internet service onboard its regional aircraft."Delta launched the effort Wednesday on Delta Connection Flight 5365, the first "RJ" in the Delta fleet to fly with Wi-Fi capability. The Bombardier CRJ700 operating the flight left from Atlanta for Omaha before eventually making stops in Des Moines and White Plains, N.Y. (both via Atlanta).

Delta already offers in-flight Wi-Fi on all of the 550-plus jets in its mainline fleet and says the move to add it to regional jets will tack on another 250 aircraft to that figure.
Still, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution notes "not all of Delta's regional aircraft will get Wi-Fi." Only regional jets with first class will get the upgrade, according to Delta. RJs that offer only coach-class seating will not.

Delta says in a press release that "Delta Connection aircraft featuring First Class cabins include Embraer 170, Embraer 175, Bombardier CRJ700 and Bombardier CRJ900 models operated by Delta Connection. The aircraft feature between nine and 12 seats in First Class and between 56 and 64 seats in Economy."

On that note, the carrier says the Wi-Fi upgrades are part of broader effort "to fully align service on Delta Connection and mainline flights. Recent improvements have included adding First Class cabins to 82 additional CRJ700 jets; introducing meal service in First Class on regional jets; and adding china, linen and silverware to Delta Connection First Class cabins."

FlightGlobal.com writes "the installation of onboard Wi-Fi on Delta's regional jets will be complete by early 2012. By then, more than 80% of Delta's entire domestic fleet will feature Gogo in-flight Internet, said the airline."

And, on its corporate blog, Delta offers this "cool factoid":
With today's introduction of Wi-Fi service aboard a CRJ700 (operated by our friends at ASA), Delta now features the world's smallest (65-seat CRJ700) and largest (261-seat B767-300) aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi … .

I heard this will put wifi on 80% of the domestic fleet. RJ's are now 80% of the domestic fleet????

All domestic mainline aircraft are currently equipped with wifi. I believe only the 767, 777, 330, and 747's are the only aircraft that do not currently have wifi because it is a land based system. Apparently all "two class" rj's will have wifi by the end of the year.

'Tis true! It's pretty easy to track folks!

Just out of pure curiosity, how do they track it? Log-In info? Can they actually see if someone accessed it from a specific part of the airplane? I haven't a clue how they'd find out if a pilot was using it or not, I just fly planes for a living!

I've heard that some crews let the jumpseater use their computer in the cockpit, don't want anyone getting in trouble.

It's not that hard.

A couple of ways are tracking when you log onto DeltaNet when you're on duty and technically should be flying. Another way is use of the employee discount code when you're working.

Don't get busted because, sadly, they're looking.

I'm posting on a SWA flight where they have wifi. Awesome! Best part was is that it cost $5. Hope they keep that price. Don't mind paying.

Sent from my iPad at flight level four oh oh.

If it were me I would politely decline that offer. I know I sound like I believe in black helicopters over my house and all but there's already been one round of negative press regarding laptop use in the FD by pilots if you know what I mean...just assume not get involved in something like that in the future.

$6/day on Gogo, sucka!

Well, with a travel industry discount.

Haven't decided on that. Either way, it will be done right with a MANUAL tranny.

Get the iDrive w/USB-iPod adapter. You will heavily regret it if you do not! Manuel the Tranny for sure! I have the paddle-shifters and it's just not the same. Plus, you always tend to bump them at inopportune times:

*rummmmmmmmmmm BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!*

oopsie!

Or for half the money you can have virtually the same performance (5.4 seconds in the 1/4 instead of the 335XI's 5.1) not only that, you don't need a $600 wrench to do your oil change.

Take the other $20,000 and buy a brand new Yamaha R1, and use the rest from that to buy your self hookers for the week.

Just sayin.
