define "contact approach"

I've seen it more common in helos than in airplanes. But a good few planes still do them. Many guys either don't know they exist, aren't comfortable with them, or their ops specs/ ops manuals don't allow them.

So bored i actually just looked in our op specs, and nothing prohibits them, half surprised, half not. At my last job we were explicitly told to use them whenever we could, so i did.

They're a great tool, but if you don't know the area good luck. I made that mistake one time, and after that i decided i had enough, after dodging towers that were up above the clouds. One of those things you look back and say WTF was i thinking?

Good point, and one that I forgot to mention: That mostly I've seen them used at either home station, or familiar fields that guys go into alot. For just the reasons you mention.
