Deer and a Dash

I dont know when this happened but I got these pics from a Piedmont mechanic at CLT. Apparently there was an ice storm which caused a tree to fall on a fence which allowed a deer to enter the airport. Upon landing a Piedmont Dash-8 struck this buck on the runway. Cut the deer right in half, and collapsed the nose gear!

Back half...

*sorry, last 2 pictures were a little tooo graphic... when you say it was cut in half - we'll just go ahead and picture that ourselves! :) Kristie

Have you heard Bill Engvall's (Blue collar comedy tour) skit about a plane hitting a deer...his wife asks him if they "were on the ground when it happened."

"Here's your sign"

Sad story though...hope everyone is ok

A Colgan B1900 took one out with a prop landing here at BHB 4 or 5 years ago. Very messy.

If that's the one that happened several years ago then I know the FO that was in the right seat.....he's now a CRJ Capt at Pinnacle.

I wonder if the captain's going to mount it :)

On a stop and go once, at an uncontrolled field in FL, we stopped next to a dead baby croc. As soon as the plane came to a stop the student pops his seatbelt and opens the door. He got about halfway out before I figured out what he was doing.

Not quite the same thing, but a (not really) funny story...

Anybody operating on the CLT ramp around 9-10:30 today would know what I am talking about.

Apparently a GPU fuel tank cracked and dumped desiel fuel all over the ramp by E10. We were pulling into E23 (which is about 2 gates to the right of that using CLT's strange numbering system in the E gates). The area had a few firetrucks and operations trucks surrounding it and people were mopping up something on the ground. I looked over and saw what I thought was a body under a sheet off to the side. My guess was that somebody had gotten run over or hit by a prop (very sad story, but tie in to PDT and hitting things). Turns out what I was looking at was some absorbant paper that was used to mop up the desiel (which stained the paper red) and then was rolled up to be disposed up. One of those wierd things.

As far as actually hitting something on the roll out or takeoff? A few bird, but nothing with legs (I think I hit a snake once). I'm trying to keep it that way.

We almost hit a cat landing in CVG a couple weeks ago..

Scurried to the left side of the runway staring at us as we touched down..

I have heard about jackrabbits hopping around Austin..I haven't seen any of them.

A couple of years ago a Learjet owned by the Dallas Cowboys owner hit a deer while landing. The Captain and F/O were severly burned in the wreck. The learjet hit the deer with the main wheels just as they were making contact with the runway. The impact damaged the squat switch and disabled the thrust reversers from deploying. The Learjet ran off the end of the runway coming to rest in a ditch.
