Decision

What about the Navy and Marines?

I did 23 yrs in the Corps, and yes, I know hundreds of guys who are happy being active duty. Frankly, if you have to ask that question you shouldn't join. During my tenure I knew a few guys who shouldn't have joined, hated serving, and got out at the first opportunity; but for the most part everyone got more fulfillment out of serving than not. The reasons a person serves will determine his level of hapiness and fulfillment from serving. If someone is just joining to fly airplanes, they will be miserable and the service will be worse off for having that person.

Was hoping to get some advice from the military folks here. I have been applying and interviewing the last year with ANG fighter units. Interviewed at 4 and and was selected as alternate by 3 of them. One has decent potential of turning into a primary spot. I also applied via the active duty route and just found out that I was selected for a pilot slot. Now I'm desperately trying to decide if I should turn down the active duty slot in hopes of going the Guard route. Would you recommend holding out for the Guard? Also, would turning down the slot negatively impact my chances with the Guard?
Thanks in advance!

I don't know if it's too late. I say AD route. Once you turn down the AD route, you won't be able to apply again. You can get screwed over by the Guard just as easy as anywhere else, if not more easily. Just realize that it's totally about serving and not about the flying. If it's only a love for flying you seek... the military may leave you wanting.
