Dead Fokker

Fokker was put into liquidation Friday by the Commercial Court of Amsterdam after the court declared the bankruptcy of NV Koninklijke Vliegtuigenfabriek Fokker together with two other Fokker companies officially ended. Engineering group Stork will continue to assure the maintenance of the hundreds of Fokker aircraft still in operation. The Dutch aircraft manufacturer was created by Anthony Fokker in 1919. In the 1950s and 1960s it built the F27 turboprop and F28 twinjet that were succeeded in the 1980s by the F50 and F100, respectively. The significant investment required to sustain two new programs combined with the impact of the post-Gulf War downturn forced the company into heavy losses. Deutsche Aerospace invested eur332.26 ($392.1 million) in Fokker in 1993 and obtained a controlling stake, while the Dutch state also had a large shareholding. But the company continued to report losses and despite other refinancing and bank credits it was forced to file for bankruptcy in April 1996, a few months after Dasa pulled the plug on further financing.

Sad news. Now future pilots will not be able to say, "I have the Fokker in sight."

CaliforniaSurfer and PhotoPilot will understand why I about fell out of my chair when I saw this headline.

Ahh, now I've got to go out and buy the "Meet the Parents" DVD!
