DE on staff

I'd think it's quite convenient...you don't have to call, just talk to him in person or walk into his office.....it also means that he's probably there most of the time........alot of the 141 "academies" have self examining authority and have a few check airmen on staff, which makes life a lot easier.....

I think its rediculous...My buddy just got his Multi-IFR rating, and the kid didnt even have to wear his hood to shoot the single engine ILS. Thats freakin insane if you ask me. And of course, the owner of the company is the DE. Can I talk to the FSDO or someone about this? If I and everyone else have to bust ass on checkrides, I think a school with an inhouse DE should make theirs work just as hard.

I have done my training to this point at a 141 school that used in-house DE's.

Just a couple of quick notes:

No matter who does the ride, in-house or not, FAA, or whomever, If I go out and bang up some metal, their ticket will be getting some question too. They were not going to pass me if I did not meet/exceed the PTS.

I know it was probably a generalization, but I know that I busted my ass on my checkrides to this point. Whether or not the DE is in house really had no effect. The one thing that I do know about the in-house type is they will be very famililar with your training as you are progressing and not jsut what you do no checkride day. That may have some effect on how the ride goes.

Agreed, JT. Also, it's important to understand the difference between having a DE on staff, and having self-examining authority. They aren't even close to the same thing.

Wings of Eagles has a DE on staff - in fact, the owner of the flight school is a DE!! No instructor is obligated to use his as a DE, his only requirement is that every CFI send him their first student. And believe me - he's not easy on students just because it's his flight school. If anything, he's tougher.

Now, self-examining authority - whole different world!!

I trained at an FBO where the owner was also a DE and I didn't think it was a problem. In fact it was pretty convenient. There was never any question about the exam being a shoe-in for student of the school: the examiner's ticket is vulnerable and that new pilot would probably continue to fly the examiner's/school's planes after they finish. Basically, there was no good reason to make it easier. Why pass 'em at 40 hours when you can stretch it to 50 or 60? :buck: (kidding)

The biggest concern I had was that the training syllabus, procedures, and "standards" (officially the PTS, but each examiner has his/her own hot buttons) were established by the same person, so there was the potential for holes in the training. But even that was kind of a good thing because I think I did more independent research about the FARs, techniques and weather to find any holes than if I instead worried about the gouge on the local independent DE.

That was just coming in as I left the flight school arena. Never cared much for it!

The owner of the flights I go to is a DE. He's also one of the hardest ones in the area. It's so bad the major flight school on the field stands there student's to Alabama.

Where in Bama? They use John Johnston?

The Chief Flight Instructor and another one of the instructors had examining authority the university flight school I went to. If you busted a ride with them, you didn't get a pink slip.....just got more training and went back at it. They were only doing privates checkrides at the time that I left though.

Johnston is the man, I wish I could have done all of mine with him. I had like a 20 min ground and hadda do a W and B and went flying for my instrument. Flight part was pretty standard, but he made the whole checkride a heck of a lot less stressful than I expected.
