DC Metro / MD Area Aviation related

Howdy Everyone,

If anyone is in the DC Metro area, I'm looking for something that might be aviation related, but more of a settled down job. Not looking at pilot spots, but maybe training or technical writing. Possibly FAA work? Anyone know of something happening in the area?

Thank You,

ProudPilot

That kind of gig at AOPA would likely by in Frederick, which is way the hell up north of DC. The DC Metro-based jobs with AOPA would be lobbying.

I would recommend that you start looking at the USA Jobs website if you want to work for the government. I haven't looked in a few months, but most of the FAA jobs are engineering/technical gigs. You should also take a look at DOT and DHS - both have a lot of openings right now.

Be advised that the USA Jobs process is a VERY long and involved hoop-jumping exercise. You have to tweak your resume just so to get through the automated resume scrubbers, and then it can take six months to get through the process. Networking helps, but they set the system up like that for a reason.

You might call around to some of the FBOs and ask for some CFIs that work for the FAA. I know of at least one (do not remember his name) but he's an FAA safety guy who works out of the DOT building down by the Navy yard and is a CFI out of KJYO.

Good luck.

Also check NTSB. Hiring timeline for Gov jobs is about 1 year....be warned! LOL
When you say training do you mean CFI work? If so I may have someone/thing for you!

PM me

Also - I know you said not necessarily a pilot spot, but our own @BenZwebner was recently looking for a new CP at his flight school in Gaithersburg. I have no direct experience with either Ben or his FBO, but their reputation seems solid as far as I can tell. There is a lot of GA out of Gaithersburg, Frederick and Leesburg - I know a CP in Leesburg who just went to work for a very well established 135 charter op out of IAD. So the stuff is out there, too, if you network it.

Ben is excellent to work with and has put a lot of work into that school, it's grown quite a bit since he's been in charge. I've heard a rumor that they did just decide on a new CP to take his place. Even if Ben didn't know of anything in the area he could probably give you some good pointers as to where to look. Gaithersburg is a pretty good airport for networking opportunities.

Yep, I know Ben as well. Honestly looking for something above 50K that is stable. I was a flight instructor for 4 years, and while I loved it, never came anywhere near that and too variable to depend on. I have some time though and I'll look into DOT and DHS. I applied to a few, but I didn't get anywhere. I'm working overseas, but I'm not active duty and never served, so no veterans preference. That seems to be the deal breaker with most DC jobs. I'm fighting up a wall against all those with preference but little experience. I've been called to a few interviews and was told essentially the same thing. I also only have my BS and about 10 years of experience. Partway through a MS, just not enough time while deployed.

I appreciate all the leads. Thank You.

I know the leesburg person you speak of! Small world right!
The charter is out of HEF though, isn't it?
So I'm a little confused, you PM'ed ProudPilot about cfii work, then said in the next post you weren't interested in going back to instructing? It's 2 am though, I'm a little blurry eyed. See my post in jobs available though if you'd like to teach some more..
Either way, good luck!

Yes the charter is out of HEF. No CFI not for me at this time. I was trying to see if he was interested in CFI work as I know a very good school that needs instructors. Just trying to help people out! I would love to get back into teaching but there is a potential for me to do 135 work...holding strong for that for a bit! Good luck in the grand opening! ;)

Yeah, I mis-worded my reply and got the OP wrong, it was 2 in the morning. Rough Friday night with the kids! (movie on the green :-) ) We need an instructor in JYO, was trying to figure out if the OP was interested...
Thanks, grand opening will be exciting, I'm sure, but I've got "day" job a little later today...:-(

Let me rephrase that, I would love to get back into more flight instruction. So far in my career, however, it has not been the breadwinner. Also looking for something to help relocate, and I don't know of any flight instruction locations that do that. As such, trying for a main aviation related job and CFI on the side.

If that all makes sense.

Got it :-) Yeah they need full timers...Good luck to ya!

Take a look at LMI and SAIC offerings in that area. More DOD aviation related, but aviation experience helps. May still have SAIC contacts from my Future Combat Systems days
