Got my private last week and to celebrate I took my lovely girlfriend to Catalina Island for a nice daytrip! The Buffalo Burgers were fantastic! The best part, however, were the great hiking trails from the airport. We hiked around for a few hours and enjoyed the absolute silence and cool ocean breeze of the island. All that work for the license finally paid off :)

Check out that shot of the cliff at the end of runway 22! Better double check those take off distance calculations!

Awesome! I read an article in a travel magazine a few months back about camping on Catalina and it sounds like fun.

Nice pictures. Can't wait till I can do the same thing...although I can't think of anywhere comparable to catalina island on the east coast.

Don't you love how the traffic advisory guy gives instructions like he's running a control tower? I think he's a washout ATCer!

Good pictures; I didn't have time to hike those trails when I went. Looks fun.

Nice photos! This is a great time of year to fly, or sail, over to Catalina. I need to get myself to Avalon for a weekend!

Congrats on getting your Private!

Catalina's a fun flight...though they keep upping their landing fees. What's it now??? Is it still $20 or have they raised it again??

Landing fee is still $20, but considering the beauty around the airport and how unique it is flying into there Id say its still worth it! Been there twice now...once during my training and then this last trip. Been great each time! Its amazing what a difference 26 miles of Ocean can make...Hiking around the airport with its serene beauty feels a million miles away from LA.

My first flight there during my training was on a crystal clear day when the waters of the pacific were a gorgeous deep blue. It was BEAUTIFUL! With this last trip there were a lot of lower clouds enroute, but landing on a mountain sticking out above the clouds was another sort of beauty than before. Cool stuff!
