With as much money being involved with him exiting the show, I would imagine that his phone was ringing off the hook by his agent, directors, producers, family, and etc... He wouldn't be bothered by going to Africa and just laying low for a while.
 
I've flown him a couple of times between LGA, DCA, PHL and Dayton. He was always very easy to have on board and willing to sign autographs for the other passengers. Also, the few times I've run into him in Yellow Springs where he lives, he seemed pretty normal and friendly.

Who knows what happened here though.
