Dauphin Island Trip

Took the 310 down to Mobile and Dauphin Island (4R9) for pre-Valentine's Day fun...

Here are the pics while flying into Dauphin Island, which is the shortest airport I have flown the 310 into (3000ft by 80ft).

Biggest thing I ever took there was an Arrow IV. Flew the 310R into Wetumpka, AL which is 3500' and that felt way too tight.

We had about a 10kt headwind and I landed maybe 200ft past the numbers, right when the stall horn started to go off...so we had 1000ft left when we hit taxi speed. Only after we were on the ground did I tell our friends that it was my first time landing on a runway that short...haha

Taking off was alot of fun...kept it low over the water for alittle sight-seeing...

The 310 still has the original A/s Indicator, which uses MPH on the outside and Kts on the Inner scale.

113 mph is the Blue Line on the 310, which is what I will typically fly as my Vref.

With that Vref, I can expect to use 3000ft total runway (assuming touching down on the 1000ft markings).

For the approach to Dauphin Island, I flew 105 mph as my Vref and touched down as close the numbers as possible.
 
Dude, that is the COOLEST airport I've ever been to! Did you go into town and get some good southern comfort food? I had a shrimp po-boy there that was EXCELLENT.
 
We walked down to town from the airport (no FBO/no services period) and went to the Pelican Pub.

They didn't have food, but got us a ride over to Barnacle Bill's, the people at the Pelican Pub were awesome (all Islanders, not visitors).

Barnacle Bill's had some awesome food and very well priced at that. The owner even gave us a ride back to the airport afterwards.

Great place to take a date!

what model 310 is that...got my multi and a bunch of hours in a 310i model...very fun to fly!!!!

It's a 68 model 310N, it's a sweet airplane. I've really gotten to where I can land it pretty smooth each time (that took a while).

We keep it based up in NE Georgia, it was the first time I've flown into the MOB area...so I had to take it an airport that was on my "to do" list.
 
I fly into Dauphin Island regularly with my students, as I work down here in Mobile. Whats really interesting is that they just re-paved the runway a couple of months ago. I was told that the original runway was made out of wood. I don't know if its true, but thats what was told to me. Definitely a fun place to land, I like to pull my students engine on them and make them do a touch-n-go there. Love coming in over the water like that. And yeah, the people down there are very relaxed and very friendly.

What surprised me was the amount of shells on the approach end of 30. If you look at the last pic I took (you gotta open it in a new window and zoom in), you can see the shells.

If I had known a fellow JC'er was down in Mobile, I would have said hello.

Are you out of Regional or Downtown?
 
I'm out of Downtown. Well the funny thing is that the birds down there have gotten smart. What they'll do is pick up there "shelled" dinner, and fly above the runway and then drop that oyster, or whatever it is, on the runway so that it busts open and that way they don't have to pry it open with their beaks or however they get it open.

Next time your down here, let me know, I'll meet up with you. I didn't realize that anyone actually came down this way :)

I used to fly into there with students when I was instructing in P-Cola. never pulled the engine but flying in at night probably wasn't the time to do that kind of stuff. We'd fly em to downtown and make em find Dauphin the old fashoined way. I miss that
