Got an impromptu ride in a G5 today:

They put PlaneView in a 5?

I have no idea what flight deck that is, but it was definitely a G5, this one happens to be the owners' backup, too. They were going to need both this weekend so they were taking this one for a quick spin to make sure it had no squawks since it hadn't flown in a month, and I got invited along.

Sure it wasn't a 550? Either way, it must've been cold. We all know real Gulfstream pilots tie their sweaters around their necks. :)

To ATC they are all GLF5's so it may very well be a G550, I don't know how to tell the difference, here is a pic of the outside if it helps:

[edit: I now know how to tell the difference (7 cabin windows), it's a G500/550, still a GLF5 to me. Also, it was toasty in there, the flight crew were wearing civies too.]

If you have the N number the year would help. I'm no Gulf expert but basically a 550 is an updated G5. A little longer range and the panel in your picture. Maybe upgraded engines as well. I can't remember. Same type rating with some differences training I think. I'm sure if you know the year @knot4u could tell you more.

That is definitely not the tail number, I could come up with a partial call sign, but the owners felt it necessary to opt out of flightaware, so I am guessing they don't just want it floating around random corners of the internet, and I want to get invited back next time.
It's not trackable but you can still look up the N number on the FAA website and get the owner/year and serial number. We both understand the need for privacy and wouldn't want you to divulge the N number or serial number. If you want to know more about the type. Google the N number and post the year here. We'll know weather it's a 5 or 550. I'm still 95% sure it's a 550. No problem either way.

Sorry, not trying to blow up your spot. Just thought that might have been an airplane that I've been elbow deep in a few times and was curious.

550: Planeview, more range (+250nm), same engines with more thrust, higher max TOW.

Must be nice to have a "backup" G550 :) You guys are correct, that is a 550. As @n57flyguy stated, it has better range thanks to aerodynamic improvements and more powerful motors - same amount of gas as the legacy GV. The 450/500/550 and classic GV are all the same type, it'll show up on your license as GV - however, if you do your ride in a GV (legacy) sim, its a three day differences course to be qualified on the 450/550. The only difference I am aware of is the avionics - @Stone Cold would know better than I.

I have done initial in the 450, with a 3 hour course for 550 differences. I've done recurrent in the 550 with the 3 hour differences for the 450. I still have not done the classic G5 course so I'm not sure what all is involved.

The picture is a G550 cockpit. Below the MFD, there are 4 buttons. On a 450, there are only 3. I'd have to look at my differences book to see what the extra button is, but those are Yaw Damper, Pitch Trim, and, I'm drawing a blank on the last one, on the 450.

Those buttons are never touched. I'm closing in on 1000 hours in the plane and have never touched them. Well, other than accidentally disengaging the Yaw Damper while resting your feet on the foot rests, once.

There are a couple of other added switches in the 550, but for the most part, they are the exact same cockpit.

Couple of other ways to tell the difference between a 5 and a 550 besides the windows, the inboard portion of the flap trailing edge isn't tapered to a point and I don't think the STC to do this applies to a 550.....

EDIT: Not my picture
