I don't know anything about that camera, but I would guess "m"= manual. From there you ought to be able to set what you like.

Get off the green box and you'll be pleased with the results.

Yeah, typical Canon setup. TopGunn: Sorry, wasn't sure if you were making a joke or not. Like Tuck said, Av (aperture priority) is a good mode for controlling depth of field. The smaller the number, the more the background behind your subject will be blurred. Also, since you're opening the aperture wider when you do snap the shot, more light gets in and you can use faster shutter speeds (in Av mode the shutter speed will be calculated automatically by the camera).

Break out the manual and learn to use manual. Far better than auto mode and the programmed modes.

Yeah my only option.

The price i paid for this camera back then, i wish i had rather purchased a DSLR for few bucks more. I dont know if its true, but i think one can learn to take pictures much better with a DSLR setup.

Yeah, it'd be better if you could swap out lenses, but to be fair I bet that thing still takes great pictures.

Select AV mode, pick the smallest number possible, maximum zoom possible, and get as close to your subject as you can, with it still in frame. That will give you the smallest depth of field, I.e blurry background. Works well for portraits.

Wouldn't max zoom be at 5.7 min, and min zoom at 2.8 with that camera?

New 'travel' camera on the way!

Didn't you just get a sigma? Is this a replacement or a supplement?

I've had the Sigma for awhile now and this is sort of a supplement and perhaps replacement. You can't beat the sensor in the Sigma, but the P7000 should offer better overall options & performance. Especially for action shots while on the bike when the SLR is too heavy to bring along. It also works with the SB strobe series, so I can use my triggers with it and get some great shots on the trails. The zoom will be helpful too as the Sigma had nothing at all, which was at times good and bad.

The wife has officially now put the kibosh on camera gear for awhile, although this was purchased with recent profits ;)

From my walkabout in Winnipeg yesterday, the Exchange District actually offers a bit of charm unlike the rest of the city.
