daily pic

I hadn't been above the arctic circle until recently. So it's pretty new to me. Still amazing that people eeked out a living that far north.

Yeah, I stopped in Barrow for a night many years ago at my first flying job and it was surreal. I can certainly appreciate the historical cultural reasons for living there, but damn, it's a really tough life... or so it seems. Everything's expensive, there's not a lot of conveniences, no booze, and even in the middle of summer it's still fairly cold. I also can't imagine there's much in the way of careers up there.

All of that said, it was a fascinating place to visit and I would love to see it again before I die.

Sun rising this morning.

So for the past three days, on behalf of the flight school I work for, we got to take a trip up to Lewiston/Auburn, ME. There were 11 of us who went up there (4 Instructors, 2 A&Ps who were also pilots, 4 students, plus the president of the company). We each were given an hour free in a 172 seaplane. One of the instructors and A&P's decided to spend the extra money and get their CSES raitings. I'd never been further north than PA before. We took a Baron and a King Air from CCO up to LEW. On the way back those of us in the Baron decided to make a stop in NYC for a day. It's been a while since I've had this much fun! Was very cool of the school to pay for our way up there/back down + the lodging/airplane time!

We were never more than 500' AGL. So much fun!

Such gorgeous scenery up in ME

Was a beautiful 172 on Floats.

You ought to come up north more often. By the looks of things LEW is in high season for leaf peeping - Central NH by Lake Winnipesaukee or south near Baboosic is where I've spent some quality years. From October until around May the scenery just pops - leaves changing, snow falling, the White Mountains...It's absolutely wonderful. That 172 would fit right in.

I don't think I'll top the fun I had getting my CSES rating! Hopefully I can save up for a block of time this summer to go splash around. I'm pretty jealous of that trip you guys just took.

That's awesome man! I got to go on one of those trips in 2012. I just did a PWM turn Saturday morning and was telling the Capt all about Twitchell's. It sure is beautiful up there. Funny story though, we took 711H up there. (The trashed Baron behind the hangar) and on the way we picked up another board member in PA. Ray was coming up in 80KY and they never made it further than PA. The starter went out on them. So we spent two days and flew back down to meet Ray. On our way back, this board member had to pee and told me to stop in AVP. I obliged the man only to have our own mx issues arise in AVP. I can still recall that phone call from Ray... It was something along the lines of "shoulda told that old man to put a cork in it".
