daily pic

Its a BMW , the check engine light came on a couple of days ago when i was trying to get the car out of the parking in snow ( too much spining i guess), i believe it is the catalytic converter thats faulty .

My advice :
Stay away from
BMW / Benz if you dont want to go bankrupt
Catalytic converter is 3k dollars
cheapest bolt is 25 bucks
go figure

Did you laugh and then walk out? Never go to a stealership for work. You can buy an entire aftermarket exhaust for a fraction of that price. GO to a local Auto Zone, if one is around you, they will pull the code for free, tell you exactly what the issue is and how to fix it and will order the part for you if you want. If you need any toold to do the job they will rent them to you, for free, you buy them then return them after your done. Its a great system.

Exhausts are cake to install, especially if its just the cat.

I badassified a picture a friend took of me

Autozone quit doing the checkengine light thing a while ago IIRC. And exhaust can be one of the most frustrating things on a car, especially looking at the temps in the picture. I'd imagine that means lots of snow on the ground, which means lots of road salt, which also means lots of corosion and stuck bolts/nuts.

Check with your local states emissions laws to see if the cat convertor is still covered under warranty. Some states now REQUIRE them to be covered for 10/100 now.

If they did word has not reached the store I go to. Ive had it done a few times and my brother had it done recently.

I agree it can be frustrating, especially if cold and the bolts are seized. But if the alternative is spending 3k...Ill deal with it. Then again, last snow storm I was laying on the ground doing the oil in my car to save $20 so maybe I am just cheap.

where are you buying parts? after 16 years of bmw ownership, the most expensive bolts i've ever bought was was an entire head bolt set for about $30. no way is a cat 3k.

i always serviced my cars at the dealership , i owned a Mercedes before this and it was nearly as expensive as BMW to maintain , these cars are only good if you have warranty , if you run out of warranty you better sell or trade it back at the dealership .
unfortunately the problem in my car is not only the cat but also the oxygen sensors (150 for each x 6 ) , an aftermarket Cat is $1200 and the original is 3000 at the dealership ! .
car is a 540i

What year?

1998 , can you hook me up ?

no hook ups, but bavauto is showing 2 before the cat, 2 after the cat, $60 each, and $19 for a o2 sensor tool. o2 sesors are really easy to change, assuming you have a jack and jackstands, or some other way to lift and secure the car. if you can undo a plastic plug, and turn a bolt in and out you can change an o2 sensor.

there are cheaper places than bavauto online as well, but i've used them for years and they have knowledgeable staff and great customer service. they have a brief write up on the o2 sensors, and if you dig around in on their website there is a diy write up as well-
