Currency and foreign licence conversion

Hi all,

A friend of mine holds a foreign PPL certificate, and wants to convert it to a FAA certificate. The problem is that he hasn't flown in 3 years, so he isn't current. Does he need to be current prior to doing the conversion, or can he do the conversion and then do an FAA flight review to gain currency?

Your friend will have to be current for his JAA in order to get the FAA private based on his foreign based license. Then he will only need to come to the US, get his FAA, then a BFR and away he goes.

His PPL will be based on his foreign, so if it is invalid for any reason, his FAA PPL is invalid.
