Curious: ATC pay increase opinions.

I did a few searches to see what I could find but didn't come up with much, forgive me if it's an old or walked over topic.

I'm really just curious to know of what anyone has heard regarding our future in pay AND benefits/incentives. The union rep at the facility I'm in the process of applying for told me that he is optimistic for an increase of pay close to where ATCers got dumped from.

Please, let me and anyone else who's interested know your opinions or what you've heard most of which may be rumors but there may be some truth.

In this economy I will just be extremely grateful to have a job this great. I hope in the future the pay will make a substantial increase, but I would not be surprised if it doesn't come until well after the recession as I think the economic stimulus plans will be more focused on creating short term jobs than increasing the pay of existing jobs.

That does make sense, and I will also be grateful. But, the economy doesn't justify the 2006 damages based on from what I heard a contracting loophole.

Agreed... With that said something needs to happen. The FAA needs a funding bill (without user fees) and controllers need a real contract not some imposed work rules. Air Traffic is a civil service and not a business...

The truth is, nobody really knows whats going to happen. Everyone in the agency is going to be optimistic, especially with Obama in the WH, but no one can predict what LaHood is going to do. The best inside info I could give from the NATCA BBS is that LaHood called Forrey on the phone and acknowledged there is a huge crisis in the FAA regarding the non-tract. So at least the dude is aware of the situation but then again, who isn't? Other than that, I say it's all rumors and we'll all just have to wait. No sense in starting rumors and speculating and getting people's hopes up.

I'm hearing rumors that something might be snuck into a new stimulus package to provide the funding for a new contract. You guys might see a fair agreement this year. I certainly hope so.

I don't know about that... We could still get privatized with people like Mica in office.

It seems that one thing regarding this is frequently overlooked. If privatized, ATC unions would be allowed to operate with the ability take work actions as prescribed by law. That is, unless I am misunderstanding something. Could this leverage in negotiations outweigh the perceived threat to not being a federal employee?

I am not saying that I would sway towards privatization...... it is just an angle that I haven't seen and thought I would introduce it into conversation.

ATC unions would be just as powerless in the private sector as they are now. This is because the president can deny a labor group the right to strike due to reasons of national secutiry. Or something along those lines... In my experiences privatization cuts employee pay and benifits to keep costs low (as well as all other funding for things like regular maintance, resarch and development, etc). Remember the government would sell it off to the lowest bidder not the highest bidder. Meaning the contractor who cuts the most cost, weather it be in employee pay or maintance or whatever, would most likely get the contract. Sorry for rambling on, I am just a firm believer that all civil services should be operated by the government for safety/security reasons. They're services that by nature don't make a profit and should not be operated like a business.

I completely agree with you. I have always thought that ATC is a system that is very integral to national security and that it falls under the band of "government services". That is a slim definition in my mind that wouldn't apply to many things at all, but I do think ATC is one of them.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. I also don't believe in user fees for safety reasons but that's another story... Just wish my least favorite congressman John Mica would see it my way or atleast stop getting re-elected. He's been in office for so long now I can't remember a time witout him...

Well, all interesting stuff. Of course, I need to make sure my color vision is efficient enough to even get the job :panic: After reading about the shortage of funds being provided for NextGen and a shortage all over I just can't see it happening but I have my fingers crossed.

With this stinkonomy about this appears to be a very stable career but I've heard from so many people that one can get screwed and have no say in the matter. Feels like russian roulette (SP) with my future lol :banghead:

Someone may have suggested this to you already but you can try to get a 1st or 2nd class pilot medical and if you pass the color vision on that I don't see why you wouldn't pass the ATC medical. I'm a flight instructor and I'ave had a student who is color confused or something along those lines but he can still pass a medical so he's not grouned... Best of luck to you.
