CTI Schools!!

Hey there everyone, good to be aboard here been watching for awhile!

My question has to do with the CTI schools. I'm just starting at this ATC adventure and currently attending Utah Valley University's avaition program and really wanna push closer to getting into atc sooner and to be honest with a better program! I've read these forums about getting started and yah de da. . . however I can't find any posts (nor outside websites) yet that have reviews or any talk about the schools themselves. The closest school to me is Green River Community College in Auburn, WA and would at least financially be the best option. So has anyone been to the school or heard anything? Please no bashing of other schools or this school, we're trying to make a career decision here senator. :D Any and all help is awesome!

Thanks for the site! Seems a bit outdated though, concidering that green river is not even listed! lol oh well any others?

Honestly, I wouldn't go to a CTI school right now. I'm not intimately familiar with the hiring process, but I know that you'd probably get hired faster "off the street" by applying right now. I know there was a job posting that closed in December, and there should be another one now (or soon). I know that some people who applied last year still haven't heard anything from the FAA about it, but I'm sure they're "on a list".

That being said, I've been to Beaver in Pennsylvania and ERAU, and would recommend both. ERAU is mega-expensive, Beaver is a 2 year program and alot less expensive. You end up with the same job with the F'nAA regardless of how much you spend on your education (or if you spend nothing at all).

I'm in the Federal way/Auburn area so I'm close to GRCC. It's a pretty good school, a friend of mine is in the CTI program there and he seems to be enjoying it well enough, I know a bunch of people that are currently attending the school for something other than CTI and they like it as well. The courses are reasonably priced as well so I'd recommend it if that's the direction you are going.

tykrtr or anyone else who might be able to shead some light on this subject. My understanding is that the pubic announcments are a good way to get in, however there are A TON of applicants applying for these positions whereas going through a AT-CTI school gives you a much better chance. My ONLY evidence to support this is through the FAA website's hiring page, where there always seems to be openings from CTI grads (A least the last three months I've looked!) So any one have any idea on this?

This is crazy confusing! :panic:

Yes you increase your chances by going the CTI route. There are a lot of applicants in the OTS pool, so you are fighting a bigger fight.

With that said, you have to think about the time frame involved. I went the CTI route. So you could say I have been in the hiring process for over 4 years already. I also have a great deal of debt. If you went OTS, you could presumably have a job in the next year to 2 years and have no debt.

With THAT said, I have no regrets what so ever. I can't speak to the programs at other schools, my the one I was in did a good job educating me.

In the end, it all comes down to the person. Everyone likes to yell
"The only people washing out of my facility are CTI Grads!!!"
when what they really mean to say is
"The only people washing out of my facility are the ones who couldnt cut it"

If you don't have a degree of any kind, I highly suggest getting one.

I went to GRCC. It's a good school, however the ATC classes are a bit disorganized. And they don't have anything for tower, they just teach mostly radar and basic stuff.

I am at Green River Right Now. It is a pretty good program that is very affordable. State of Washington Tuition is only $10 more for out of state students. If you go to any other school it will be 300 istead of 90 per credit hour. Some of your classes will transfer too. I have a provious aviation degree so I will be here only 2 quarters.

Thanks everyone for the responses! Hey 27273, are you in the CTI program at GR right now? Just found out today that teh CTI program runs right along side my other 4 year degree! So it's a win win! :nana2:

Thanks again,

Stephen C

Yeah I am in their CTI program now. Like I siad depending on your credit and what you have complete they will transfer everything they can. Also they will be flexible with the transfers too. If you have any questions give me your email address and will give you my phine #. I am sure it is not the best CTI school out there but it is the fastest and the cheapest and you will get what you put into any program. AJ

Going CTI is a smart route because the annoucements will always be open, while the same is definitely not true for OTS. In a few years, OTS hiring may not even happen at all when you consider how many CTI schools the FAA has been opening. The biggest benefit for CTI is that it gets you a foot in the door by allowing you to apply to CTI only annoucements and pretty much guarenteed to take the AT-SAT.

You could also look at the University of Alaska Anchorage where you can major in aviation, and minor in ATC. Our ATC sims look pretty impressive, but then again, what do I know, I am a piloting major:p
