CTI (Enroute): What to Expect?

So, I'm headed to OKC on Dec. 19th. I am CTI, so I am skipping basics and headed straight into enroute training. I was wondering what to expect when I first get there. I've heard that I have to take a test over what was covered in basics, which shouldn't be that hard, but I want to be prepared. Also, how much time will I have to memorize the map? Thanks in advance for all of the help, and I look forward to seeing everyone in OKC!

I'm in the same boat you are, just I'll be headed to OKC in January for ZSE. From what I've been told the first 3 weeks or so are non-radar... Good luck, haha I know I'll need it!

X 6se of Jackson at or above 9000, cross blah blah blah...

Yeah, nonradar was the worst part in my opinion. But, it's not a pass/fail part.

You have ample time to memorize the map. Overall, it was a fun experience. I graduated June of 07 - one of my classmates just got checked out the other day.

In regards to ZSE - don't choose A or B areas. C is descent and D is the easiest. This, of course, is assuming they let you pick your area. A is the seattle area (hasn't signed anyone off in almost 4 years), B is portland (where my classmate got signed off - but a hard area) and C and D are east of the Cascades of Wa and Or.

Good luck, have fun, enjoy the per diem (we didn't get it) and for God's sake do yourself a favor and relax with some beers on the weekends.

my friend said you have about 11 days or something like that to learn the map. i posted a copy of the map in a thread (the link is below, and if you go to the third post on that thread i also posted a blank copy). this will atleast give you an advantage for when you get there.

(any questions about the map you can PM me)

Thanks for the map- oh the memories...
Those first map questions on the test:

1) Label all compulsory reporting points with in the ZAU area
2) Label all MCA intersections
3) What type of intersection is HATER? What does the flag indicate about HATER intersection?

etc... good times.

Do most places let you pick your area? I did not think this was ever possible, but if it is, that would be awesome.

Thanks for the heads up on ZSE. I take it you're at ZSE now? If so what area did you get? What do you think my chances are on picking my area? And did you're friend get checked out in about a year and a half? That seems awfully fast for any center but then again I'm probably wrong. I'm more then willing to bust my but to learn and get certified. If you have any other tips that will help me at ZSE please let me know. Thanks again.

Good luck, OKC isn't bad at all. If you can't handle the Jackson Low map then you're gonna have issues.

I'm currently at my center and the maps are no freakin joke. One map is comparable to about 4 or 5 ZAE maps.

Thanks for all of the help so far guys! I still have one more question for those of you that have gone through this already: is there a test on everything covered in basics when you first get there, or is that information just something you are expected to know? I seem to recall that one of my instructors at MTSU said that there would be a test, and if you don't get a 70 or above you are kicked out. She might have just been trying to scare us into studying.. lol.. but I need to be prepared just in case!

I'm also curious about this basics test... Any CTI students/pilots have trouble with it?

I just took it as my final for my Non-Radar class at riddle. I studied and got a 97. Some of the questions were stuff that I definitely did not know, but since I studied, I got most of them right.

By any chance do you remember what some of the questions were like?

Yeah I always thought enroute would be way less stress then working at a busy TRACON?

That's what I thought as well... lots of over flights, and you don't really see the crash like a tower controller would. Then again I could be wrong.
