cross country

One fine March day in 2003 I woke up in Camp Udari, Kuwait, pre-flighted my Chinook, and crossed the border into Iraq. The next 6 weeks was one long cross-country where I criss-crossed from Kuwait City, Baghdad and Mosul, and very remote points in between. At one point I was grounded in the middle of the open desert for 4 days due to a dust storm. Got really tight with my crew that week.

-Three CH-47s under my control for 6 weeks: FREE
- 3000 lbs of Jet Fuel per flight hour: FREE
- Occasional and spotty maintenance support: FREE
- Taking a dump in the middle of the open desert during a dust storm while your crew laughs at you: PRICELESS

That was cool, I been across the desert before.... I know the feeling....
I never been across the desert in a helo for long period of time, I have done it in a Humvee.....

Is it common for pilot just to jump into a helo and just go cross country... Example NY to VA something like that

If you want to build some cross country time... sure. keep in mind that for training the cross-country requirements are significantly less than for an airplane. (Usually everything is cut in half).
