Cross country time towards ATP

Guys,

As a CFI, what are some of the ways you can build XC time towards the 500hr ATP requirement, especially before the new ATP rule next May. In a perfect world, 500hrs XC would take years to accomplish based on the little cross country training available to students.

Is it possible to fly a longer block of time and fly two Part 141 Private/Instrument/Commercial lessons in one continuous flight over 50 NM away and back without landing somewhere else. I heard of some rumors that flights must begin and end at a Part 141 base. If this is true, can anyone highlight the regulation that refers to this in Part 141.

Thanks.

In a training environment, it's pretty hard to justify taking a student 50nm from the airport to do a lesson on stalls or steep turns, so I wouldn't count on logging too much time that way. What I did was to find the instructors who didn't want to do xc flights, and volunteer to do the lessons for them.

Otherwise, it's pretty tough to get 500 XC as a CFI. I've never heard of a "141 base" or any associated cross country requirement.

Best way is if you have two students who are close to training take them both up in the same airplane one flys there and on flys back. This will give them an you XC time, and also allow them to see how others are doing it as well. Thats about the only good way I have found to do it.

If you work for a part 141 school, my guess is that they have some commercial lessons that are time-building lessons. My school used to have three complete flight courses that were all cross-country time. It's good for commercial students to go on long distance cross country lessons. 250+ miles to get some real world experience. Instrument students can also help depending on your location. We had to go over 40 miles away to find an ILS approach, so it wasn't hard to go the extra 10 or so to an airport that was a little further and do several approaches on our way back
