Cross Country Recommendation?

On a side note, yesterday I flew into the best airport I've been to yet. O22 in Columbia CA. I have som great pics and I all try to post them sometime. It was absolutely stunning flying in the mountains.

I'm typing this at The Airtel, Van Nuys on airport hotel. I love it, 75 degrees and zero clouds. I want to move here!!

Columbia!!! I've flown in there so many times with my dad. Why the heck did you fly into Columbia???

Just got back from Saint Cloud, MN... I ended up going there because the FBO's in SD would've charged me a $30 or $50 callout fee, depending on the airport I chose. Pretty clear and calm night. Zero turbulrnce, except light chop on the way down.

The wierd thing is it was 2 degrees C at 4,000 feet but -8 on the ground at GFK...temp inversion I guess.

I had a lot of hours to make up. I did GFK-BIS-GFK, GFK-FCM-GFK, and GFK-FSD-GFK.

There aren't really any cool airports around here. I'd recommend the GFK-INL route for the free jam.

Ah, Columbia. That IS a cool airport. I flew there out of Ried-Hillview in San Jose a couple years ago - when we got there it was around 95 degrees in town! Yuck. You're right though, flying around the mountains up there at around 9k feet is pretty awesome. I was a bit nervous, though, only having 1 engine.

Columbia O22 is one of my favorite airports. I flew there over thanksgiving break with one of my former students back home. We took a 182 there. Another of my California favorite airports includes 3O8...Harris Ranch (New Colinga). You can get some of the best steaks of your life there. The runway is also 30 feet wide. Its about an hour flight from the bay area.

As far as cool places to go up in this neck of the woods...my favorite is International Falls. As said by another poster, you get a free jar of jam with fuel purchase. I went there with my student and we went to this resturant called "the Chocolate Moose" about a mile from the airport. The workers at the FBO gave us a crew car. Real good food.

Harris Ranch is one of my FAVORITE places to go to. The BEST steaks ever! I like how the runway parallels I-5.

Last Christmas I was intending to fly to Half Moon Bay and do the bay tour, but the fog in the SF Bay wasn't burning off by the time we arrived. We ended up diverting to The Nut Tree in Vacaville. That place has a lot of great memories when my dad and I would fly their for lunch... and the little miniature train would pick you up and shuttle you to the restaurant. We parked there and expected to have lunch at the restaurant...only to find it was shut down. Recently it has reopened and I plan on going there this December.

Yeah, the Nut Tree closed down some time ago. It was sad. Hopefully the new one is as good, but I don't know if the little train will still be there...

I too have wanted to go into Half Moon Bay, but my mom is scared of the crosswind :-P If you do end up there, make sure to do the trek into town and grab some lunch at Barb's Fish Trap. Excellent stuff.

Barb's Fish Trap? Haven't heard of it, but will give it a shot! Do you know if there's a crew car available, or is it within walking distance?

From what I've heard, that's kindof the annoying part. No crew car, and the airport is a mile or two outside of the city. It's walkable, but it's a good walk. Taxi supposedly takes a long time to get to the airport too, so if you want one, better call with you're arrival time ahead of time. If I ever get out there, I'll probably take some skates with me or something.
