The ALPA lawyers would have a field day if you fired someone just for being an 'irresponsible moron' concerning a uniform issue without any progressive discipline, ESPECIALLY if it just says 'black shoes' in your FOM .

My mantra is "don't get time off for something easily avoidable".

I've worked for three airlines, and all of them had pretty specific guidance on shoes. Something along the lines of "black lace-up dress shoes excluding wingtips."

Yes, the termination likely wouldn't survive arbitration unless there was a previous history. But the terminated pilot who fought for 12 months to get his job back would learn that he can't violate rules just because he feels like it.

I'm a pretty lenient boss, and in a right to work state, I've voluntarily written a progressive discipline policy into my company's employee handbook. But when it comes to very easily followed rules that everyone knows up front, there is no excuse for blatant insubordination.

Oh I agree, it is RIDICULOUS for anyone to be wearing these shoes. COMPLETELY unprofessional, BUT, as @ATN_Pilot pointed, out, firing someone for this would be very difficult if it was their first offense.
