CRJ night trails

That's crazy.....it looks like daytime for sure. Until you see the lights at the bottom of the picture.

Cool stuff!

Sweet, Tim!

Hey, let's try that with the mighty C172. Let's see, 30 second exposure...might actually have lifted off the runway by then.:)

Nice pic Tim. They took off then from the pic raised that nose to a high AOA. Looks kinda like a SNA departure. That a normal DCA DP?

Very nice.
What time of the evening was the picture taken? Must have been a moonlit night to expose the clouds.

Pretty much, they have to avoid that mall area 1.5 NM north of the field and the runway points right to it basically. It can be interesting there at times.

It was around 9:30 or so. What was weird is a front had just come through right before that. The winds were pretty strong and right down the runway for a while and then in about 5 minutes the winds did a complete 180. What was neat was that they had about 5 planes waiting to depart from runway 19 and when the winds switched they taxiied all the planes right down the runway all at once and had them queue it up on the other end for take off. Never seen that many airliners taxi down a runway at one time.

Oh yeah, the light on the clouds was all from the city lights, the light on the trees was from a simple street light behind me.

Is DCA primarily RJ territory these days? Or do they still get mainline jets in there from time to time?

-Matthew

From what I have seen, it is about a third to maybe half RJ traffic with the rest being mainline. That also depends if you consider the new E-Jet and RJ, DCA gets alot of those. Biggest thing they get is a 757, but alot of A320/737 traffic.

They get mainline traffic. You can get up to a 757 into there, and I know that UAL operates a few of them to DCA, or did at the beginning of the year, who knows if they do now.

Delta runs some MD-80s in there, so does American. US Airways has 737s going in and out of there. And I know that Northwest runs some flights out of there but I'm not sure what airplanes they use.

Sounds ALOT like PHX traffic!

Yeah, I saw a G-IV land there a week or two ago. Probably the only person to use DCA as a GA airport... What a pain that has got to be with all the regs that go along with that kind of operation.

DCA could stand to make a ton of money if they allowed GA in there, there are tons of execs in Crystal City that would get some great use out of it. Perhaps the airlines are paying the government to prevent GA in DCA?

So far the only 757s I have seen in there are from Delta, and 'Merika Wurst.

It's our lovely DHS. GA is pretty much banned at DCA. You can get in, but you've got to have (I believe) an air marshall, get checked out by the TSA at your departure point, and a whole bunch of other things that make it completely impractical for virtually all GA.

Even the corporate guys who can afford it ain't gonna bother with it when they can just fly to IAD and get a car to drive them to Crystal City.

You can have DCA. Fun to fly into, but always close to P-56. We don't do any crazy climbs, just an early turnout to the NW when departing 1. I'm pretty sure I saw a UAL 757 there the other day. NWA flies the Airbus and the biggest thing USAIR flies in there is the A-321. Still impressive to shoot the river visual to 19 in something that big.
