Craziest airports you have flown into?

1500x20 with a slight curve.

All aviators from Atlanta area should give this one a try if you can find it. I flew into this airport in Cummings, GA a couple of years back, after landing we were greeted by the locals with a wave and weird stare. I swear the runway curve looked more pronounced then from the picture, it seemed to me like it could have been a road some years back. Fun experience though.

i use to fly out of san carlos...it only makes gud x-wind pilots...how often do u fly in there...?

Ah yes...I've spent many hours at SQL. They do have some good cross winds there. Its kinda a strange airport. Anyone notice that is very difficult to locate? You could be pointed right at it and still have a hard time finding it.

Also, have you noticed the little wind sheer while on approach to runway 30 there? It comes off of those buildings next to the highway.

The guy who owns the land Mathis field is on uses my flight school for pilot services for his bonanza. He refuses to fly solo anymore because of this http://www.worldbeechcraft.com/Pages/accidents/acc081403.htm look for N67011 . He landed in a crab and made a beeline off the runway. Yes he did have to pay for the sign he damaged (which he said was quite expensive but does have it hanging in his hangar). He's also the same guy that lets me a ride with him on some trips.

I would say my favourite is Catalina Airport (AVX)... very scary approach with downdrafts coming over the ridge:

I second that, high winds and jaw dropping scenery just makes you wanna do everything but landing the damn Cessna.

craziest approach/landing i've made would probably go to HUX/MMBT (bahias de huatulco, mx). Runway is parallel to the coast (sea breeze keeps a nice crosswind) and about 20 miles north you have mountains up to 12,000 ft (airport is at 460ft). The varied terrain on approach and right up to the approach end of 25 make for a very interesting approach if the wind is blowing.

http://www.airnav.com/airport/E24 would have to take the cake for me. Whiteriver is east of Phoenix up in the MOAs. It's the only airport I've ever had to circle over the field to clear the terrian.

You have to make right traffic for Runway 1 and as you can see the terrian comes right down to the edge of the runway. Oh yeah, there's a fun little canyon at the end of the runway that causes a nice drop on final.

Looks like Whiteriver needs some security:

Additional Remarks

- HEAVY CANYON WINDS.
- HEAVY FIRE SUPPRESSION WORK MAR-OCT.
- RED BALLS ON PLINE WIRES.
- MOUNTAINS ALL QUADRANTS.
- WATCH FOR JOGGERS ON AIRPORT.
:sarcasm:

Follow the river through the hills and jog onto short final over a boat ramp right at the end of the runway. Watch out for driftwood on the runway.

Crazy winds and the occasional person wandering around. Runway is 25 feet wide and right next to the freeway. The "taxiway" is the worst thing I've ever taken an airplane on. It looks fine from the runway and the beginning/end, but in the middle I was genuinely afraid of striking the prop, but there wasn't enough room to turn around so I had to press on, made it through with only some grass stains on the prop. Only did that once.

Tiny airstrip literally right in the middle of town. The runway meets the road, and only a single cable seperates the two. Power lines on the other side of the road, and it's polite to make sure there's no one standing behind you when you bring the power up for takeoff. Oh, and sometimes the runway is under water.

This is our dirt road that I've been flying off of since I was a student pilot, 800 x 10.

Do you want a gold star or something?

Just kidding ;)
That's pretty cool.

How do you list that in your logbook? "Home"?

Straight up I deserve a gold star.

Hey you'd probably fly your Ercoupe off our road if you could keep it going straight ;)

The looks of passing motorists are priceless...

I guess I could call the road something official sounding but its easier to just write home.

My grandpa used to keep his 182 at his house when he had a sod farm (grass). One day this guy knocks on his door and tells him he has an aeroplane sitting in his front yard... My grandpa was like "Really??? Where did that come from?"

Okay, that takes the cake.

For me, Clearview Airport in MD (2W2).

1800 X 30, surrounded by trees, and a slope that will put you airborne unless you're pushing down on the yoke. Try that in an Archer :)

LOTS of fun for you Mid-Atlantic flyers. I highly recommend it!

See but that's a real airport, mine doesn't count cause its just a random farm road.

Another cool place I've landed is El Mirage Lake (dry), its due west of Southern California Logistics (VCV). Its like 5 x 2 miles so its a fun place to play around with a 150 or something. Its hard and flat enough that you could even take something like a King Air in there if you really wanted to.

A few years go before I got my PP license I took a trip to Africa. We flew around to different camps along the Okavango Delta in Botswana in Cessna. Landing on makeshift dirt strips along the way. A few times we had to buzz the strip to get giraffes and elephants off the runway. Too bad I didn't have my license then. It would have been amazing to make those landings myself. Our pilot reminded me of Steve Irwin.
