500RPM loss at 500' AGL on upwind leg. Heavy vibration. Took the controls from the student, made the turn, landed opposite direction with a 17 knot tailwind. This four days after my 121 offer. Fun FUN!!!!!!!!:D:D I should add that the engine eventually seized, so I guess I made the correct decision to try and not make a trip around the pattern at 500' (as you know, Cessnas don't climb at 1750RPM

Ouch! Good decision though. Were's that MOA in your avatar?

Haha thanks... The MOA is the KANE WEST Operations Area near the Salton Sea (south of KPSP) on the Arizona/California border. The MEAs are 10,000 - 12,000, so I probably got the bright idea to photoshop the Y in there while up there in a Seminole.

Haha, clever.

Not as clever as the kid I was flying with. We were at 12,000' droning alone, and I hear this disturbing "hmmmmm" noise on the intercom. I look over, and the guy has nearly all of his boom mic in his mouth. Needless to say I asked for lower.

I had a weird vibration in a 182 years ago and diverted to KABQ. Didn't think too much of it, but enough to make a precautionary landing, as I turned about 1 1/2 mile final I shoved the prop to high RPM and there were two vibration surges through the whole airframe, quickly followed by the windscreen going black with oil, the engine free revving and a new oscilating vibration. I quickly pulled the mixture, opened the side window (get a clearer look at the runway) and made a quick call to the Sunport tower that I was dead stick on final.

Turns out that there was a prophub failure and it shed a prop blade in the air.

Never did find the blade anywhere though from what I understand...

A prop imbalance like that can quickly tear an engine from its mounts, leaving one in an impossible weight/balance condition as the CG shoots way to the back. Your quick action shutting 'er down just may have saved your bacon!
