Costs

If an individual does all things at the lowest possible cost....How much should it take him to go from 0 time to CFI?

I am paying about $28,000 that includes all my materials, unlimited ground instruction, and zero time to MEI. 270 Hours all together.
Of course thats to fly older planes, with a knowledgeable and experienced CFI who loves his job and not some schmuck looking to build time, and move on. Oh and we have kinda crappy weather here, everything from Heavy Snow, to F5 Tornadoes. No Beaches, No shiny brochures, No Cool Simulators, No multi-million dollar marketing campaigns, No full page ads in Flying Mag. But hey, I am sure that the King Air Pilots I talked to today were joking when they said "We call those Academys..Diploma Pushers, guys come out of these big schools and can't find their ass with both hands" That has pretty much been the consensus in my daily conversations with Pilots, that actually HAVE JOBS!! Those are the people you want to get guidance from. I have been in Training for less than a month, and already have been given nice tours of aircraft by Captains and FO's. They all say the same thing, become a CFI, that has always been the proven path to future employment. Advice from guys that actually get paid to fly some pretty damn nice aircraft, and not people selling you a flight school.

Thats my rant on that. Find a passionate and knowledgable CFI, and that is the school you should go to. That kind of quality training will be worth more than money.

It appears that very few people accomplish ratings in the lowest possible cost in this industry; not to say that it can't be done. If you think that you're one of the few, then by all means plan your finances accordingly, but don't be surprised if you run out of money midway through your training ad then flop around for a while trying to build up your finances to start all over again.

Instead of planning for the lowest possible cost, how about you plan on the highest possible cost?

You could probably do it for around $20,000 if you found a good club and put a lot of effort into it. Finding a club with low prices is the key.

I'm hoping to get my CFI at about that. The "scam" I am working is the PIC while being a safety pilot. Paying for 1/2 time....

0 time to just over 300 hours where I got my CFI was about $25,000 I believe. Right after my private I joined a club and started working on my instrument with another guy and logged some safety pilot time. That was a good learning experience and has helped me in my instructing as well being able to see what was going on. It also allowed us to take some longer trips I wouldn't have if I was paying the entire bill and cross country experience is great to have.

Happy flying!
