Continental Express Observations

Last night I had the 1st time experience of riding in the EMB-145 (I think, not sure but it had winglets.) from EWR-MSP. Just wanted to note several observations for in no specific order for no specific reasons.

The plane:
Very small, but then again it’s an RJ. Had 15A so at least it I didn’t have anyone sitting next to me. It did seem to have much more leg room for me to stretch.

The flight:
During cruise the F/O left the cockpit to use the lav and I noticed the FA went into the cockpit and locked the door. I suppose it is some type of security thing, so I won’t ask.

Very smooth flight and coming into MSP we landed in low vis and snow. I am not sure who made they landing, but it was a greaser.

The airport (EWR):
Holy smokes was it busy. Flew out on a Sunday night in not the best of wx. One thing I noticed that struck me was what appeared to be the overall mood of the COEX pilots. They all seemed to be in a great mood smiling, joking, and carrying on when meeting each other. In contrast, when I saw some of the other pilots walking around (not COEX) pilots they didn’t seem to be in the same mood. I did notice a COEX pilot trying to jumpseat on our oversold flight. He was in some worn looking-faded jeans and an untucked shirt. That caught my eye as when I was at NWA, they would not allow us to non-rev looking like that. My question to the COEX pilots we have here, ‘Is there any policy that you guys have regarding that type of thing?’

Very good flight and experience, but would not recommend an RJ for a flight that long.

Overall I would agree with your observations. The Emb-145XR has winglets. The 135's and 145ER's and LR's do not. No doubt EWR-MSP is a long sit in the back of the RJ. EWR is an interesting place to be based. I enjoy the flying out of that hub more than any of the other three but then again I'm a bit biased. Having spoken to people who have worked at all 3 of our bases I have heard on many occassions that the EWR crews tend to be the most friendly. I have no reason to believe this is true since I've seen good and bad out of each base but I'm just passing along what I have heard. Everyone is partial to their base and truth be told I doubt their is much difference in the overall attittude of the crews.

Probably the best part of working for this company are the people I meet at work. I have to give our HR department credit for one thing, they have, with the inevitable exceptions, done a tremendous job evaluating character at the interview. In over a years time I can count on one hand the Captains I would prefer not to fly with again.

As for our jumpseating policy. According to company policy, the jumpseat dress code is business casual or the uniform. It specifically states no jeans, t-shirts, or tennis shoes are allowed. I'm surprised that guy got past the gate agent and frankly I'm a bit embarassed.
