MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- A Continental Airlines passenger jet made an unexpected landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after reporting smoke in the cockpit.
There were no flames visible inside the plane or outside as it was pulled into a gate near the runway. An RDU emergency vehicle followed behind the plane.
Continental Flight 881 was headed to Bogota, Columbia, from Newark, N.J., when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and a possible engine fire. The 757, with 106 passengers, was diverted to RDU.
The plane landed without incident, and no one was reported injured.
