Contacts vs LASIK

Depending on how bad the astigmatism is, you MAY be able to go with regular contacts. I had a doc for YEARS tell me I needed toric lenses. I when to another doc in an emergency, and he said I was crazy for paying that. My astigmatism is so slight, that I didn't NEED torics. I see just fine with my Acuvue disposables.

I made the decision to get Lasik done prior to considering flying for a career. Looking back now, I'm not sure I would do it at this stage of my career. However... I've had nothing but the best of results.

I did travel to Canada and I did have Astigmatism. Not only is the process cheaper up there, it is also more advanced. They used equipment that is 5 years ahead of the U.S. due to the FDA approval process here in the states.

Overall, I had less problems, pain, halo's, dryness, etc... than most of my freinds who had the procedure in the states.

I now see 20/15 and don't regret it one bit. As far as medical paperwork went... I only had a 3rd class medical at the time with a restriction for corrective lenses. When I went to get my First Class Medical after deciding to make a career out of this flying thing... the Doc simply had me sign a statement on the medical that stated that I had Lasik done and there were no known problems. There was no delay and no extenuating circumstances or paperwork with the FAA. First Class - No Restrictions.

That's my story. Individual results may vary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm looking at the AOPA website and it says that basically, if you get LASIK done, when you get the visual acuity that you need for your class of medical and your doctor releases you to normal activities, you can go flying again.

I'm getting my eyes zapped on January 7. So if they get to 20/40 (I only have a third class medical) then I am good to go, from what the AOPA site says. Is this correct?

Of course, I want them to be 20/20 or better but who knows, that may not be possible. If it's not, then I'll just wear glasses to 20/20 and carry them with me when I fly.
