Congressional Sequestration and Tower Closures...

Is your field on the "chopping block"?

A few of my local area airports are... KCRG (my home), KVQQ, and KSGJ... I'm not particularly worried. I mean, life will go on. But with 4 schools, 3 charter companies, a med-flight company, the police aviation unit, and various other private and commercial operators I think things could get a bit messy. Especially because we are wedged right in between 2 military Delta airspaces and partially under the shelf of a Charlie airport to the north. Could get interesting.

VQQ and SGJ are both fairly busy airports too... VQQ has ATAC, Boeing, LM, and 2 schools on the field as well as USCG and ATF aviation units. SGJ just has a few schools and a small charter company or two but all the schools cater to foreign students... Anyone whose ever tried to fly in the pattern down there on the weekends knows it is a proverbial ***t show.

Is this going to effect anyone else?

CMA. Yup.

And it'll be bad. In fact, I'm willing to bet that it will result in several incidents, if not accidents.

This would be a good thread to post specific changes, for example:
KXXX tower hours of operation cut from 0600 - 2200 daily to 0900 - 1800 M-F.

If KGKY can operate without a tower for years without any midair's, then any airport can. KCMA is, in comparison, a sleepy, rural airport.
Meh, I still don't feel happy about it. Particularly when it comes to, say, tri-tip Saturdays.

Eyes out...

We have the only 24hr Class D in the area and it's slated to be the only one to remain open in any capacity between YIP (ours), PTK, ARB, and JXN. PTK is way more busy than we are, even though YIP used to be a major freight hub. We still have four 121/Supplemental operators, five 135's and corporate out the wah-zoo, not to mention all the weekend warriors in the area and our flight school. It's going to be a mess.

Don't forget the more important issue as far as travel goes.

Furlough'ing FAA controllers 1-2 shifts every pay period.... Be interesting to see how they're going to keep airspace open

I think the number of fields losing weather observers will have a much bigger impact.

The non-Fed tower at KSFF will close. Fine with me. The airport manager was on the news today saying safety will be maintained whether the tower is open or not. Which begs the question...why is it there? There isn't that much traffic and I say it's a waste of taxpayer money to have the tower.

this is nothing more than political BS, funny how thay didnt give a crap about understaffing years ago when we were working record amounts of traffic.

While it may be political BS, the reality is the money won't be there and the cuts will happen starting tomorrow.

APA, COS and ABQ all have night closures forecast.

I don;t see any problems, they are so quiet at night it's probably a good way to save money. It should be permanent.

I do agree that there are certainly some towers that don't serve as big a purpose as others. Ocala and Lake City come to mind here in FL.

ABQ huh? That could get interesting if the close the approach control as well. We have a couple flights in and out after hours. I could see center clearing you to the VOR and cleared for approach, call us landing assured, have a nice day. Better brush up on those CTAF and no vector approaches.
