If I fly from KCOS to KCPR ( Casper WY) It's 258 NM one way. So that will take care of the 300 NM xcountry for my CPL.

But does that Xcountry count for the "one cross-country flight of at least 2 hours in a multi engine airplane in day VFR conditions, consisting of a total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure"?

Can I do the 300NM xcountry at night and count it for the night xcountry?

  1. " as specified, and 5 hours in night VFR conditions with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower. .....Can I do this in a C172 if I'm getting my inital in a 310?

Regarding your cross country you would also need to land at another airport and I don't think it would be able to count being that the 2 hour xtry is required as instruction received as stipulated by 61.129(b)(3) and the 300 nautical mile xtry needs to be done while performing the duties of PIC required by 61.129(b)(4). And for the same reason I don't think it could work as the night xtry. You also need to do the night pattern work in a multiengine because it is a requirement under 61.129(b)(4) as well.

61.129(b)(3)
20 hours of training on the areas of operation listed in § 61.127(b)(2) of this part that includes at least—

(iii) One 2-hour cross country flight in a multiengine airplane in daytime conditions that consists of a total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure;

(iv) One 2-hour cross country flight in a multiengine airplane in nighttime conditions that consists of a total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure; and

61.129(b)(4)
10 hours of solo flight time in a multiengine airplane or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor (either of which may be credited towards the flight time requirement in paragraph (b)(2) of this section), on the areas of operation listed in § 61.127(b)(2) of this part that includes at least—

(i)One cross-country flight of not less than 300 nautical miles total distance with landings at a minimum of three points, one of which is a straight-line distance of at least 250 nautical miles from the original departure point. However, if this requirement is being met in Hawaii, the longest segment need only have a straight-line distance of at least 150 nautical miles; and

(ii) 5 hours in night VFR conditions with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings (with each landing involving a flight with a traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower.

At least, that is how I interpret it, I'm sure someone will probably disagree and insult my intelligence, but like you I am here to learn. :D
